The lower 48 of the US has 542,325.22 sq miles (about 1,404,616.00 sq km, ie larger than Patagonia as a generally defined region) of just BLM (general use public land) and USFS (public forest land) land (not national parks, and Alaska's figures haven't even been added yet). The US's southern most western states can get colder than the entire southern hemisphere in the average winter, and ironically, hotter than the entire southern hemisphere every summer as well (in different places).
