Anyone else a part of Boy Scouts at some point? I made Eagle around 2019. I luckily had a good trop that taught me well and I never got molested. Any stories? I feel like the later ranks (Star, Life, Eagle) emphasize paperwork rather than /out/ skills which is kind of a drag.

in my part of the country, 1/3 of troops were Mormons, 1/3 were asthmatic dweebs, and 1/3 were pyros with based leaders slipping them bourbon.

I was the latter and miss it dearly. Big regret never doing Philmont. I'm young enough that joining up with a local troop without a kid wouldn't be too weird.

I quit after life when I got my driver's license and realized I didn't need scouts to be /out/ anymore

The program has absolutely gone to shit, I hear trail life is pretty comparable to the bsa of the past if you want your kids to get that kind of experience, I have some friends and even former scoutmasters who have silently transferred over to trail life and say good things.

My scout troop was a little more advanced back in the day compared to most other troops because of Vietnam vets running the show, but by the time I left it had been pussifed and now I think the troop split into people who actually go do long distance backpacking and those who look at stars through telescopes and do indoor rock climbing walls

It was definitely my foundation for where I am today and I’m glad I was there, but don’t put your kids through it if you can’t find a good troop hidden somewhere

Uncle Dan and Lord Powell are spinning in their graves. BSA used to be the world standard in scouting but devolved into a den of pedos and a place for suburban single moms to dump their dysgenic m son once a week so he can be a “man”.
It’s a crying shame.

Troop went to shit as soon as the then leader left for deployment around 2017 and was replaced with one kids mom. She got her city slicker mom squad to run the show as soon as she could. Never was the same.

When I joined there was lots of hazing towards the noob scouts. The new femnine leadership took all the fun away. I live in a small town of only a few thousand. next closest troop is at least an hour away.

Started as my friends and I from middle school to high school. Eventually they all left/got drivers liscenses/grew up/gfs whatever. leaving me with a bunch of autistic anklebiter zoomers with adhd. (we were them once)

around 2018 or so when girls were allowed into scouting my troop split into 2 with the boys troop and the girls troop. Dumbest decision BSA has ever made.

I did get to go to to the Betchel Reserve Jambo in 2017. Did the 50 miler, 3 times, once canoe, once kayak and once hiking. Got to go to have a lynch mob once because someone in our troop punted this camp owners dog in the middle of the night.

arguably, 2nd most memorable trip was when a local sailor let our troop join him on his sailboat for a trip around the San Juan islands. My patrol did night watch against raccoons with our knives and a bb gun.

8/10 would do it again.

my troop went to a camporee every year in maryland or pennsylvania or something and we held an initiation ritual for the new scouts, they would be told to crawl through a culvert and once they had all entered people would piss at both ends.

2019 Eagle as well. My class was probably the final one before BSA really began falling apart. My troop is built on a very strong foundation so it hasn't been pozzed but Covid really messed with us. The troop doesn't feel the same to me. There's like an age gap or something as a result of the lockdown.

BSA has been hit with a few very, very large lawsuits that will bankrupt the organization. But what a lot of people miss is that the Left took this as an opportunity to destroy a very powerful conservative organization that was producing very competent, strong, and straight young men. The left viewed as simply unacceptable. They had been weakening the BSA by allowing homosexuals in and creating female troops but the lawsuit thing was the final blow.

I visited my troop at a summer camp last summer was blown away by the culture shift. The girl troops were present and there were many young girls running around. It felt like a fucking daycare. With the presence of girls their age the boys in my troop shifted their behavior as you'd expect.

It's always been like that but with the lack of minor hazing and strong male adult role models it feels like something's off.

Shit, it's hard to put my thoughts in order because I'm watching the BSA crash and burn in real time. This year my council sold off part of a summer camp to a housing developer. The BSA is just another casualty in the ongoing culture war, except this time it's personal

Did they really exclude atheists? I had a friend in my troop who was an atheist but still bowed his head during prayer out of respect for the scouting principles.

BSA was legitimately the most important formative aspect of my childhood. We had truly exemplary leadership/activities over the years. Ex military/LEO, an engineer, a professional hunting guide, ect. We did real orienteering. At least a dozen 50 milers. We built load-baring structures in the woods. We even did milsim airsoft one time.

I fully recognize that my experience was unusually excellent, but the death of the BSA is still a huge loss to the boys of this country. I hope something rises to take its place.

I was never involved in Scouts myself, but I tried to get my son into Cub Scouts. I volunteered a lot of time, wore the uniform, did all the trainings, etc. But there weren't enough other parents who wanted to get involved in running it and the whole thing fell apart, pack was disbanded when we couldn't find enough volunteers to recharter. Asked my son if he wanted to find a different pack, he didn't care to.
