There’s a billion in South Florida too. Common aquarium fish that lazy people think will clean their tank and they don’t care that they get 16”+, so they let them go in a pond and they go everywhere because of the canals.

There are all sorts of aquarium fish around here, types of cichlids have pretty much replaced bluegill around here, and there’s a couple lakes in Palm Beach Co that have those big knife fish, pretty sure pic related bitch is right there. The Seminole Tribe sponsors a fishing derby every year that targets invasive species in the Everglades.

You can’t throw 1/32nd oz jigs with a regular ass baitcaster and that’s what I caught my best bass of the year so far on. Of course, I use a spinning rod for the small stuff because I’d rather pay way too much for a knife than way too much for a fishing rod.

Not bad. I like to bake my fish in the oven with Porq' breadless alternative that uses fried pork rinds and smoke flavor already added in. I know it sounds dumb, but carbs and sugar is my mortal enemy for keeping off the fat. I try to stay away from fried foods if I can too.
>Preheat oven 400
>Filet fish
>Pat dry
>Mix salt and white pepper with flour
>Scramble eggs in bowl
>Mix seasonings with the outer layer of breading
>Dip fish in flour
>Then eggs
>Then Porq breading mix
>Spritze lightly with extra virgin olive oil on outside with a spray bottle
>Cook for about 30 to 45 mins depending on your settings
I also eat fish without the breading sometimes and just do a butter, lemon and garlic sauce on top.

So my custom swimbait rod maker, who quoted me 3 months for my XH 3 to 8 ounce rod, is now on month 5 of my order and I still don't have it. I'm going to go out tomorrow and throw the Tyrant 10 topwater rigged, my rod is only rated up to 6 ounces and I've caught bass on the deps 250 before, T10 is only ~6.2 ounces. Wish me luck.

Fishing bros, I feel real bad, caught a 13.5 inch spotted bass and the hook fucked his jaw up, I released it back and it was sluggish asf. Game wardens were making rounds and I didn't wanna take it home and potentially get a fine. What should I have do? My gut tells me I shoulda brought it home and cooked it. I use pic rel for sight fishing micros at night.it only ha white light so I use medium brightness for finding the fish then the dimmest setting to get close without spooking the fish. Never tried colored light but I think red is less likely to spool fish than blue.

Everything. Try swinging streamers size 6-12, swinging wet flies size 12-22, and if you see them taking things off the surface try dry flies size 12-22. In my experience small stream brookies aren't too picky as long as they're hungry and they can fit it in their mouths.

I want to start catching catfish. One of my local ponds is filled to the brim with sunfish and has cats in it too. I was catching 4” sunfish and rigging them live on a 1oz c rig with about 18” of leader on a 2/0 circle hook with no luck after hours of waiting. Should I try again, or should i give a different bait a try?

Sunline sniper FC 20 pound, that's all I throw on my swimbait rod lol. Just got back from the lake, I should've just staid home. It was stupid busy, I thought just the weekend would be the worst, Monday not being TOO bad, was wrong. The coves I fish had like 4-5 families each. I saw a bunch of bluegill(I think) hanging out by the shore, I'd try to coax them into biting. Every time they'd go after it and I felt it, I'd try to set the hook and they'd swim off. I spooled my reel for the first time also and I definitely didn't put on enough line. I'd reach the knot on my casts.

I'm going to try fishing again tomorrow. It was really nice seeing a snapping turtle swimming, and seeing the deer swim across the pond. Only negative was one obnoxious family on the other side yelling at each other.

I'm the anon from the last thread that made the soft plastic swimbait based on the color combination chosen by whoever got dubs first. Saturday they got a few strikes but the color for that day ended up being a blue. Today I went out again and started with the gold ones and landed a 17" Cabezon first cast, maybe 20 mins later landed a smaller Cabezon that bit as soon as the bait hit bottom. This was a fun thing to do. I'll do a similar post for a new color In the next thread

I don't quite know what you mean about losing the lure, but maybe your knot is bad. do a uni knot. also, you don't have to set the hook hard with small or thin wire hooks that are very sharp. you just maintain tension in the line before the fish bites, and when they hit it, you just gently sweep the rop.

Alright, that's probably where I messed up. Next time I'll let them nibble on their own and it'll get in there. I had three bluegill I could have caught if I wasn't a dumbass.

I would like to try catching Crappie, fishing from a dock on a small pond. I was thinking of just using minnows and a bobber, or should I stick with earth worms or just keep with plastics?

don't just let them take it without resistance or they will swallow it. keep the line tight at all times and as long as there is no slack and you don't cover the hook point with the bait they will get hooked. crappie are harder to catch because they require the bait in the perfect spot. usually right above their face. that's why jigging small plastics works best. you can use a small soft plastic under a float if they are further away and let it drift around giving it twitches every now and then to find where they are at but you will get lots of strikes with no hookup that way.

I would avoid using clips (I assume you're using barrel swivel snaps?) . tying lures on directly in a non slip loop knot works well for giving lures maximum action without the bulk of of the clip. clips/snaps are convinent but they can be off-putting to some fish.

The rod is an old rod I bought for $5 at a yard sale. It's an Eagle Claw Featherlight Wright & McGill 2 piece. 6.5'. I don't know if that matters. The reel is a Regal(?) 5000 I think. I'm going to try again with plastic bait for a couple hours today. I'll do live bait when I get on the boat.

well there is always gonna be some slack in the line, but you just have to keep it to a minimum and be ready to tighten up the slack when a fish hits/ some people just leave the rod unattended, and that's what I'm saying not to do. be actively waiting. it's quite common for everyone starting out to pull the bait from the fish trying to set the hook. the best advice is to try a slow sweep of the rod to one side rather than a jerk upward.

For frogging I’d run straight braid no leader line. MH or H does the trick, you need a stiff rod to set those heavy hooks. Cheap casting combos kind of suck, the reels don’t have the best braking systems which makes the learning curve steeper.

You can get a decent price on an SLX casting combo from tackle direct. The rod and reel are normally $99 each but they sell them together at $129. SLX is a pretty popular reel at the price point, but I don’t know much about their rods

I own several $1k+ freshwater combos and two $1.5k+ fly rod combos. The key is to not buy them at MSRP. The higher the price the fishing tackle, the bigger room for negotiation and haggling. All of my Loomis's were bought for 40-50% off, including my Asquiths. This was A LOT easier to do during and pre-COVID, I don't imagine tackle shops doing that big of a discount any longer. Reels is still easy, just buy them straight from Japan for 30-40% off or during Black Friday going to American Legacy Fishing and buying one of their excellent condition used reels (basically new).

I'm not opposed to spending more if I need to to get a quality setup, I'm just not 100% dead set on whether I'll really go fishing more frequently than I've gotten to in the past. It's currently full of mosquitoefish that are thankfully multiplying well and feeding on the pellets. Plenty of crayfish and tadpoles. Bullfrogs have returned aafter being absent for a few years. The bluegill are overpopulating so I am trying to cull them. The redbreast seem to be thriving. They're in the middle of their spawn rn. Fliers chilling. normal fishing here is basically just small perch, roach, grayling, brook trout (illegal in 3/4 of the country) or occasional pike
if you want anything bigger than 15cm not counting pike you pay expensive fishing permit like everyone else, this means there is usually a single rapid where they put rainbow trout in every 7-14 days and first day hundrets of people gather there to fish them all out, most of them just pick them up from the shore and go home
actual trout is never put in anywhere because it is 2 or 3 times as expensive as rainbow trout and you are not allowed to keep native trout, fees are something like 10 000 euros if they catch you in some places
there are also pike-perch and lake trout (illegal in most cases) but you have to troll those with a boat

Good lord! The reservoir I fish is stocked yearly with all kinds of fish, mainly wiper and walleye and some others in smaller amounts. You need to visit the US for some gud freshwater fishing Finnish fishing bro. Up north in Wisconsin and Michigan is some amazing Northern Pike and Musky and Crappie. Colorado and the Rockies trout, and the rest of the country, catfish, panfish and all kinds of bass type galore.

I highly suggest the northern Midwest for some amazing lake fishing. Northern Wisconsin or Northern Michigan I assume in maybe Early to Mid Spring, but I haven't fished up there in years. There is some great fishing in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado on the Arkansas River, but you have to go out of your way since everyone fishes for the trout so heavily in the rivers and streams and some of the reservoirs out there are great. Down south on the East Coast there's some great swamp and ocean fishing too and some good brackish and river and pond fishing. But I tend to hate the swamps because of the bugs, alligators, cottonmouth snakes, and the smell of rotting bog. Tennessee has some amazing fishing too I've heard, have a cousin who wants me to join him. Oklahoma has some great lake fishing too. Not a big ocean fisher either myself just because I prefer to be on the ground when fishing. Did you have a very particular species you'd want to try and get? I don't know if you have Muskies and Tiger Hybrid Muskies in Finland but they're like Pike on steroids.

i didnt measure the lings but i would say they were probably 50lbs 35lb and 20lb. The big one came up with the leftmost rockfish in his mouth so it was a nice twofer. Rockfish is delicious especially when breaded it makes for excellent fishtacos

this may be a dumb question but I tried a spinnerbait for the first time and I could barely cast it. it's 3/8oz and the rod takes 1/8-5/8 so the weight should be fine, the only thing is if I reeled the line in all the way, the spot where the line is tied to the spinner might be getting caught inside the ring at the very end of the pull and messing up the cast. So my question is is there something I should be putting on the line to prevent that or do I just simply not reel it in fully before casting so it doesn't get caught?

good setup to start with, how are you detecting your bites? line watching helps a lot
for setting the hook, make sure to reel down as much as you can to take up slack before setting the hook, between the presumably mono and the action of the ugly stik, there's gonna be a ton of give so its gonna take a lot to get a good hook set
you might look into getting some 1/4oz ned heads for your craws, might have an easier time for hook setting practice

I snagged a 50# bluefin on its side while speed jigging at night last week and it felt like I was reeling in a really big wad of something until it started peeling drag. Even then it felt weird because there was no head/tail shake. The deckhand thought it was an opah or something until it finally started going on actual runs. A guy the next day actually had a mola mola take his sardine and that was pretty cool, it kept jumping which I would have never thought one of those big doofuses could do.

So I decided to jump into fishing more seriously and
after some research decided to stock up on swimbaits as a generalist bait for both freshwater and surf to save money. They seem pretty versatile as you can rig them on jigs for action, Texas Rig for weedless, or on spinner baits as a trailer. So far I got white flash and smallmouth magic (keitech) and Chartreuse pepper (exoswim). I feel these three cover the range for most conditions but was wondering if something like alewife or silver shiner would help round out my set. Another tempting pick is Divine brand's Pro Blue as it can imitiate Shad in clear conditions and MAYBE juvenile Mackrel(?). Would appreciate any advice. Socal is my region btw.

Swimbait is pretty good. Lucky craft flash minnow 110 is really versatile and effective for shore fishing if you are willing to spend >$20 for one. Generally you will go from 1/4 oz to 1/2 oz jig head fishing from shore for salt water. Get some warbait jig with the weed guard in case you run to a place with a lot of weeds or eel grass.

Plastic swimbaits aren't super effective in the socal surf, but theyre great in the bays. My go tos in the surf are an lc flash minnow 110 or similar suspending shallow jerkbait when chasing halibut or a carolina rig with sand crabs or gulp sand worms when going for corbina and perch. I do catch jack mackerel and chub mackerel from shore on small 10-30g shore jigs, but thats off rocks or jettys. Not really sure what you mean by juvenile macks, ours only get a foot or so long.

I did some dropshotting today for panfish. I kind of like it because it's pretty unlikely that they can swallow a hook due to the tension, the line itself acting as a barrier, and the abiility to feel the bites. I'm gonna have to run braid mainline though because that just makes it a thousand times more sensitive for when I'm using lighter weights, it's a little hard to feel the 1/8oz weight on the bottom with mono or hybrid line. 1/4oz works fine though. I caught a dink bass, some bluegill, and had a 5lb+ gar try to gently swim away with it in his mouth. The Owner Mosquito Light hooks are really good though. I bent the same one out several times on snags, and bent it back with pliers every time. I need to go to the lake to get a real test soon.

Yes, but ultralight is a niche that is almost for "dinklet cope" unless you are using it solely to target smaller species like sunfish and trout (only trout might really matter since sunfish are usually super aggressive anyway).
I wouldn't get an ultra light combo solely for the "sensitivity". You might bettet off trying something like a medium light combo for general purpose if you like the sensitivity without pushing into the niche territory.

bass yes, pike or anything with teeth you really don't want to risk because the thin line will not hold up to their teeth or their power. like the other guy said, you buy an ultralight/light so that you can use the light lures, even if you're targeting larger fish like bass. if that's what you aim to do, then do it. 99% of my fishing is done this way and my "heavy duty" rod for my bigger lures is just a medium-light with 8lb line. for things like esox I'd recommend at least a medium-light and if you're using light line, you want a thicker "teeth-proof" leader like thick mono. another thing is that some lighter rods have next to no backbone at all for any big fish because they're not made for that kind of fishing, while others do have a very stout backbone when you really get something decent sized. tldr it's better to just have two separate rods, and they don't even have to be xpensive either.

You can, but if you're fishing around heavy cover or snags you will have trouble.

I've caught a bunch of ~40inch pike on my light cranking rod while fishing for perch, and with braid and a fluoro leader im not worried about getting broken/bitten off, but the fish is 100% in control until it gets tired.

I'm very inexperienced, but I'm interested in checking out all the different places near me (around one of the great lakes). I'm hitting a small lake tomorrow for some smallmouth bass and potentially trout. I'm bringing live worms, dark green/gold senko, and a couple lures to try & get a sense for what the local fish like this time of year.

I've been doing a lot of reading and really from what I've gathered, it seems like I just have to gauge the water I'm fishing from and figure out what works best.

Lew's WMCS70MLS or TFO TPS 701-1 and any shimano reel from a cheap FX 1000 to a nice Sahara FJ 1000. The Lew's I'm pretty sure is just an updated color(and price increase) version of the same rod I have that has caught more fish than I can count. It's my favorite rod of all the ones I own despite being the cheapest. Being a crappie rod it has a very soft top half for casting extremely light jigs, sensitivity, and not ripping lips/pulling hooks out, but good backbone for several pound fish. Disregard the medium light rating, that's just crappie-speak I guess. Both of those rods do have stainless guides though so long-term braid useage could cause issues if it's softer stainless, I can't say for sure. It works just as perfect for hard treble baits as it does jigs too, I catch lots of decent sized bass on it that way.

yes. jigging rods usually have different style guides. the first guide can be really small double footed like on a casting rod.

I went jetting fishing for the first time and it was a blast. Got out there at low incoming tide. Wind and surf was coming directly at the jetty and you could see foam accumulating a few yards off shore. I was throwing 1/4oz spoons and a mepps as far as I could offshore but the wind was counterproductive. The action from the hickory shad was nonstop when I could get my lure out far enough and deep enough. Landed one, lost a few trying to winch them up from the surf, and got a dozen more hits besides that. They would even jump chasing my spoon along the surface.

drop shotting is the only style of finesse fishing I can do without getting bored to death. hell, drop shotting isn't even really a bass finesse thing anyways, a traditional catfish rig is basically a drop shot, so is surf high low rigs. it's just versatile.

I hate finesse fishing, I either want to reel a lure in, or just throw a bait out and wait. Finnesing the lure or jig just fills me with frustration because I barely know what I am doing.

I've pretty much only fished texas rig my whole life (for bass), with the occasional spinner but never have had luck on any lures. Bought a kayak today so my access to spots just ziptupled. Gonna hit the lake tonight with some dark senkos wacky rigged.

Wacky rig is similar to texas rig, it’s a slower presentation. Wait til one of those days when a storm is coming in and toss a big spinner. When the fish are actively feeding, you can throw faster flashy stuff that will attract them from further away. Other times, you throw the Texas rigs and stuff and try to finesse them to bite an easy target but you’re not going to attract fish from far away. But if you throw big baits at that time, the fish don’t have the energy to go after what looks like a school of fish.
