It has already been established that ultralight is strictly for speed runs on trails and if you aren't competitive(30+ miles per day average on trail) then you don't have any reason to be ultralighting you should just be stronger.

No I'm saying if your goal is to do ultralight, then your goal is to be competitive at ultralight, as that is the entire point. There is no ultralight 5 miler, there is only the trail speed record. If you can only hike 15 miles with 20lbs, you aren't doing ultralight hiking, you are a sick or elderly person trying dodge the grim reaper with light exercise.

In conclusion, your hiking gear should be non-specialized until your abilities improve. You will progress faster this way, and enjoy yourself more. If you can only walk 10 miles the dumbest thing you could do is bring just your underwear and half a spoon.

seems like its also great for people with spinal injuries. 20 or 30 years ago i would have had to give up backpacking. thanks to the availability of ultralight gear i've been able to pick up where i left off, without missing a beat.

That is how I feel. I use ultralight gear wherever it makes sense. My tent is a lanshan 1 pro. Im not going outdoors without my extra socks, or my decent first aid kit. Or with extra food or water. But im not really interested in through hiking TM. I like weekend trips or expeditions. like to blue glacier up the hoh river valley in olympic national forest.

I think in some ways ultralight hiking, and through hiking is a domesticated form of enjoying the outdoors. Its kind of like being vegan. You are just overlanding from grocery store to grocery store.

Not OP but I have, in fact, built a house. Gymming properly will make you stronger than "other" physical activity, and is actually critical to ensuring good joint health and mobility if you're in blue collar work. Both together will make you far better physically than just physical labor by itself.

It’s discomfort and inconvenience. Now you have to rehydrate your toothpaste blobs somehow, instead of just jutting it on your brush. Similarly cutting the handle off your toothbrush to save a few grams results in a more difficult clean, and a less effective one overall. Ultralight shelters even when setup properly are incredibly flimsy, and susceptible to high wind are getting shredded by the smallest flying branch. I’ve met ultralighters who just bring powdered onions because they don’t want to bring a stove/fuel. At this point why even live.

For real though, the average shelter does not see any advantage of significantly thick fabric or similar 'durability' increases. The times that require a 'strong' shelter are not things appear suddenly and surprise you, you plan for it. And for what it's worth I don't believe that someone's out there eating powdered onions. That's not even calories, let's alone calorie dense. Do you mean using powdered onions instead of real onion?

i was gonna use them with a ccf pad, do you use the things that strap them around the inflatable? also have you tried 7D material for one? my current sleeping bag is alright but it compacts down pretty large so its the only thing preventing me from using ~30L bags

My 4 year old cheap amazon set is 3.5lbs. Will gladly pay $100 to drop a pound if possible, but much beyond that I'll probably just buy a lunar solo

The only thing you might be able to get is a new suspension. A hammock body might might save some weight but one with an attached bug net is going to be over $100. Tarps are over $100 as well. A netless hammock body is closer to $40 or $50, but if you have a cheap Amazon bugnet or tarp then it might be too small (cottage industry hammocks are a lot larger than Amazon stuff).

Just quickly looking at the ENOshit, new straps and their sub6 would save me about 11oz for $115 (plus tax+shipping+tip). Not quite worth it unless I was committed to hammock camping long term. If I could drop some of the 10oz of my bugnet by having it built in it'd be an easier sell.

Upgraded to a hammock gear Trek tarp this year, so can experiment taking that out by itself once the bugs fuck off in the fall and see if I even need a tent/hammock

If you're moving to down from synthetic, the fabric will only make a small difference versus the fill power of the down. 850fp packs down hella small, my -10C bag is about 10L (guessing). Ill defer on utility of 7D versus typical 10 and 20D. The strap thing makes a big difference on most quilts because it seals in the edge. Inflatables mush so they seal better, but that would also depend on the pad attachment. Id msg the maker and ask honestly. If you don't like the answer, a hoodless sleeping bag may be a little heavier but easier to seal up. Although if this is for 40F and up it's less of an issue.

If you can hike over 20 miles I a day with a chronic back injury you're on flat as fuck terrain. It can take me 7 hours to do a 12 miler and I'm fast as fuck. If I stick to the waterfront where it's flat, paved, and follows the water I can do about 30 in that same amount of time.

1.5mph is flying for the guys I see suffering with 60lb packs at my local park for no reason. Always annoying to pass them because they have their trekking poles splayed out across the entire trail trying to stabilize the monument to the walmart camping section strapped to their back.

I am currently warming up a bar of soap in a pot of water so it can be soft and malleable to form it into a small deodorant stick. It will pack down small and not make as much of a mess, plus it is solid soap so there isn't water weight!

When I go for a day hike I just take my bumbag filled with all purpose stuff and a water filter, and then I just put my snacks in my pockets. The only reason I can think of taking a small backpack is if you are sure there won’t be any fresh water you can filter from on your route.
