I have had 7 bear encounters. 4 black bears and 3 grizzlies. None of these encounters have been dangerous. Every time the bear is eating something and then walking off. I don't understand what you have to do to be attacked. What are your bear encounter stories?

surprise it. get between it and its cubs or food. its common sense not rocket science.

My nieghbor was bushwacking thru some forest and spooked a griz who was napping in his day bed. Griz charged him but then fucked off. scariest moment of his life he says.

I have had dozens, all black bears scouring for leftover bird seed or trying to steal a trash bag. They're harmless in this state, out searching for food. They probably realize it's my territory. All have just run away when I talk to them (no need to even yell, just say "hey bear watcha doin?")

Just blackies growling at the campground dumpsters near my tent. I keep a .357 handy but thankfully haven't had to use it. I go camping to camp, hike, and fish, not gut and clean a bear. Those furry assholes are usually scared off by my snoring anyway. Fuck bears.

How? I've only had one and it was in 1985. I go innamountains but the bears are stealth.

I think it depends on where you are and the time of year. Great Smoky NP is crawling with them in the winter but you only see them around dumpsters in the summer.

great book on the psychology of bear attacks, how to avoid them, how to defend yourself, and everything else related to the topic of running into a bear out in the woods.
your local library probably has a copy if you don't like pdf's.

You dont have to be doing anything, bear decided if it wasnts to fuck with you.
Generally speaking though, animals have the ability to sense tension and fear, even humans can do this. If you are not giving off those vibes, the bear wont act in a way according to that. Basically just leave them the fuck alone and they will leave you the fuck alone.

That said all this goes out the fucking window if a cub is near, if you see a cub turn the fuck around and fuck off in a very calm collective manner.

Just had a young black bear on my deck

I scared him off but he came back so I shot him with 22LR. Enough to give him a sting and hopefully not come back. Young looking one, maybe one of the cubs from last year.

They'll wreck my bird feeders. I bring them inside at night but it's still bird eating time.
Besides I don't want to feed bears. Ever hear "a fed bear is a dead bear"? If it's not me with a .22 it'll be a neighbor with a 10mm.
