The ranchers are dicks for trying to exclude people, but it was corrupt politicians in the 1800s who divided up public land that way. It allowed mining and railroad companies to effectively get exclusive access to twice as much land as they actually owned.

Timmy and his Dad will shoot you and kill you for trespassing. Many such cases where this has happened and the owners never have charges stick, they say some dangerous looking vagrant was trespassing and coming right for them, all they need to do is shoot you in the front. I’ve heard this is an issue in Texas as well.
