i noticed that sheepskin is quite a bit lighter than woolen cloth. I have a 50's military greatcoat and a 70's sheepskin overcoat. I'd say the latter is at least as warm and more confortable, while being lighter than the former. The wool coat is crazy heavy, i cant imagine how they just carried it around all the time

whool is expensive, heavy, and chafes the skin (even more expensive grades of wool still hurt your skin)
there's a reason most don't wear it anymore

i agree the weight to warmth ratio is the reason its mostly obsolete. But when weight is not an issue, wool still holds up very well and has many advantages. I love my wool jackets and coats.
Regarding the chafing, that's a you problem lol. I wear wool all the time two thirds of the year and Im never bothered by the scratchiness. And its not modern merino soft stuff, most is decades old rough fabric haha

Very pleased with the $25 wool commando sweater I bought from sportsmansguide.com last fall. I wore it nearly every day last winter and it's none the worse for wear. I think they were ordered for a police department that never paid for them or something like that.

its a genetic thing. some people are some people aren't.
the fairer skin you are the higher your chances of being sensitive to it and this board is full of crackas.
there's wools out there without lanolin and barbs but they're a bit more limited in what garments you can make from them, or expensive, etc etc.

problem is they come from low population and/or endangered species where the only harvesting of wool anyone does is whatever falls off the animal on its own naturally.
so you're largely paying to subsidize the existence of an endangered species like american bison etc and less so for the fiber itself when you buy it.

You don’t own any wool. Any scratchy fibres get worn down after a first few wears and washes. The more you wear it the softer it gets. My wool t shirts feel like silk now.

Wool is extremely popular, it’s just expensive so a lot of people opt for synthetics instead. Merino wool doesn’t chafe; you obviously either don’t own any and are just repeating some outdated bullshit based on generic bargain bin wool, or your skin is extremely sensitive.

And most importantly it's cheaper. Fleece is also available as jackets with lots of extra features (pockets etc.)

It doesn't feel heavy when worn, does it? Now look up how soldiers used to carry wool greatcoats. Ever notice photos of WW2 Soviet soldiers, that weird cloth donut they wore over their shoulders? That's their greatcoat. Which doubled as storage since you could stick things inside while it's rolled up, and use the greatcoat as a coat, pillow, blanket, etc.

Wool socks are great, they are the only thing I will wear if I am going camping or doing outdoors shit. Got lucky a few years back picked up like 15 pairs for about 2 bucks a piece at a tent sale at the local sporting goods store. Everything from ultra light to super heavy and everything in between all usa made 100% merino.

love wool clothing. in australia it's pretty cheap too. something people might not be aware of is you can get wool overlays for your mattress which are highly recommended for temperature regulation (if you ever feel like your mattress is too cold or too hot).
