Trust me when I say that the outdoors is gatekeeping itself. Of every single person I know, a tiny fraction of them actually go outside for longer than it takes to walk from their house to their car. The one summer BBQ they go to is most of their outside time in a year.

Nearly every person who talks to me about /out/ hobbies or interests just watches YouTube videos about it and then never fucking even goes for a day hike.

This. The subset of people I despise generally don't participate in the /out/doors anyway. Liking nature also means being able to be alone with your thoughts and not having screens around to fry your neurons every three seconds. The citiots just aren't able to handle that anymore, and the same goes for the mentally ill and terminally online.

Either teach your friends, family and community to conserve and preserve the natural beauty and it's purity (no, I'm not some environmentalist nutter) or don't take them out or encourage them at ALL if they can't do basic human concepts like cleaning up after themselves or helping to clean up in general. If you're going to encourage the outdoors, encourage responsible and ethical treatment first and foremost when you go out to the outdoors. Even this will weed out the assholes who just don't listen and then just undermine them to never want to go out into nature again if they are incapable of cleaning up after themselves. Conserve, preserve and clean up. None of this weekend get wasted, leave your shit everywhere and BBQ and camp like pigs.

no its not, gatekeeping is very often a good thing, but like others have said, the outdoors kind of gatekeeps itself. if you walk further than around 2 miles from the parking lot of most trailheads the number of people you find drops massively.

Yes, because we live in a democracy. If 99% of society is cityfags who never go /out/, then we'll be governed by people who have no idea about the outdoors. I have already seen articles online proposing banning fucking campfires entirely, or setting aside parks and forest lands for wildlife and banning humans from entering entirely. If people don't go see the outdoors for themselves they lose the context about how retarded that shit is, and never learn that a responsible, sustainable relationship between humans and nature is possible where humans still interact with nature and don't just stay in cities.

Bringing annoying retards /out/ might make it more shitty in the short term, but it educates and improves the retards. Society benefits from having more outdoorsmen, not less. Same reason I try to take cityfags shooting whenever I have the chance. You learn to fear and hate that which you're unfamiliar with, like guns and even nature.

If you mean hoarding useful information from noobs, then no. The only exception I make to this is the location of "spots". I'm not fisherman-tier paranoid, and would really appreciate it if a buddy gave me a tip of the best places if I was flying into an area, but they shouldn't be plastered online for the public. Besides the obvious downsides of arriving to your hidden "campsite" already taken/trashed, it takes all the fun out of exploring.
