then you have decide what kind of fishing you want to do (sit and wait or actively casting and walking around trying different spots).
then go to your local outdoor supplies store and ask then what they suggest for rod/reel/line for the local bodies of water and what lures would work well with the local predatory fish.
I personally recommend fishing for catfish because they live almost everywhere and they are easy to catch.
the bait I use for catfish is beef livers, they are easy to find at most stores but you many have to ask the butcher for them and they are cheap which is a plus.
I use about 1 inch squares of liver when I fish. If you want to just catch and release the fish then use a bobber so the fish hopefully won't swallow the hook, if you are going to cookem up then I would just put a weight on the Line and let is sink (however if there is lots of shit on the bottom then still use a bobber). Once you get to where you are fishing just cast your bait out there and wait, every 10 or so minutes reel in and check your bait if it is untouched then try changing spots or where you are casting. The time of day doesn't really matter for activity of the fish but a good rule of thumb is the hotter/more intense the sun is the deeper the fish will be.
