Most commonly I see generally positive motivations: positive both in the sense of positive attitude and positive force. Most express a love of nature, adventure, and (either destructively (e.g. making land more useful for his purposes) or nondestructively (e.g. summiting a peak)) "conquering" nature. These seem to be people of generally good psychology. They enjoy a variety of environments, including some, like deserts, which I have no appreciation for.
My motivations are more negative, again in both senses. I appreciate nature for its offering respite from normal existence. In this way it functionally resembles sleep or even death. Dense, dim, old growth forest epitomizes this hug of nature. Lovers express that they "could die in one another's arms"; in more fantastic frames of mind I feel I could die in such a place. Calm relief rather than exciting venture.
This could rightly be called unhealthy and immature, but I wonder how alone I am in these sentiments. Does /out/, even just at times, relate?
