Hi /out/ hoping you can give me some advice on how to clean this quartz rock I got.

Overall I think it’s very awesome but on the top part the crystals have some kind of black grime on them.

Here’s a closeup, if you can see there’s little black spots on the crystals almost like it’s been left out in the rain and splashed with dirt or it has mold all over it. Not saying that’s what it is just what it looks like.

I’ve tried washing with dish soap, soaking in vinegar, and then a baking soda paste but nothing took it off. Actually I think my attempts made the whole thing look cloudier and smelled like vinegar until i went over it with baking soda.

The internet has some info about polishing but those are small, tumbled stones so I’m not looking at the right info since this is a hefty rock.

I read about iron oxide but that’s for the orange spots so I don’t think that would work here. Is there something else I could try?

Thanks in advance! I plan on going fossicking soon so I’d like to know how to clean rocks good and share my finds.

It might not be 'dirt' but a chemical component of the quartz. Maybe feldspar.

I thought smoky was the deeper color. These specks don’t penetrate beyond the top layer and where it’s chipped there’s none.

Also the spots are probably hematite and you probably won't get them off, if you do the quartz crystal underneath will probably look damaged.

hey cool i find chunks of these at the beach all the time. usually i just whip it at a bigger boulder so it smashes into smaller pieces

For future referance, quartz that is orange stained could be left overnight in some iron out

I’d recommend using some iron out like the last anon said and scrubbing the fuck out of it. It doesn't look like yours is gonna get any clearer than it is already though.

but try scrubbing and ultrasonic bathing but also, as said above, acid/iron out is probably your best bet.
