Okay guys, lets talk about trespassing here for a minute.
I know a lot of you go "stealth camping", but where exactly ?
I have many places in mind personally. and ive heard of many people camping in way stupider places than i would.
Lets say, state park off trail camping. think the park rangers care?
how about, army corps of engineers park thats open for day use only, (This one in particular is 10 miles of lake shoreline)
but would make for the perfect fishing camp.

My concerns are:
-being woken up by park rangers / army corps of engineer officers / police
-legal problems that come with camping / trespassing in america (texas specifically but ill accept other places laws as well of course)

1. Don't give them any reason to look for you (i.e. if camping is by permit only, and your permit has you reserved in X designated campsite, your car is at the trailhead (and assuming it's not a popular trailhead), but you are not in X designated campsite
2. Use a low profile, discreet shelter, like a gray or tan bivy in the desert, or a camo bivy in the forest.
3. Don't camp in an obvious area, like near water or in a clearing.
4. Don't let your campsite be visible from the trail.
5. Don't make a fire or excessively use a flashlight. If you do any cooking/heating of water for food, be mindful that smells carry far.
6. Bed down late, and get up early, before dawn. They can't prove that you camped in a "no camping" area of a national park if they don't see you camping. For all they know, you were hiking through the Grand Canyon by moonlight the night before.

cause a lot of people fish the shorelines at night in the summer anyways
theyd just think i was one of them .
Really i feel like i could use my quarter dome well hidden between some hills,
but what would be the repercussions of being caught ?
If they were extreme enough yeah a bivy would be a good idea

I don't know about parking, but I think that if you're parking overnight at a parking lot in a park where overnight camping is expressly forbidden, then yeah, you're probably going to get caught. I would not use a giant yellow tent, personally. As for the consequences, I don't know. On private land, people might get pretty possessive and try to pull a gun on you (even though it's illegal, even in Texas, for them to shoot you if you're not threatening their life). In parks, the rangers will likely give you a fine or a slap on the wrist, maybe make you spend a night in the county jail. Trespassing is a civil offense, and it's not like you're going to go to prison for camping in a no camping area.

Maybe it's in between point A and point B which are public land. Maybe all the mountains in an area are owned by utility companies who are never going to build trails on them (or patrol for trespassers), and there just aren't alternatives. Maybe you think some private property owner is just hogging too much beautiful land for himself.

Silly bureaucracy and pencil-pushing has legislated all the fun out of the outdoors. I have heard that it is harder to get a rafting permit for the Grand Canyon, just to give an extreme example, than it is to get a reservation at the swankiest restaurant in Manhattan. You literally have to reserve years in advance if you ever think you're going to raft the Grand Canyon (that is, if you want one for yourself because you know how to raft/kayak, and don't want to pay a thousand dollars to some company that has a bunch of these permits because they reserved them long before you).

me and some friends used to go camping in an abandoned golf course back in highschool. it was fucking awesome, there was coyotes to chase at night, and it was next to a race track so there was stables to explore and the course was pretty massive so there's always somewhere to explore inside. we came up with different names for landmarks and shit. we would make fires in there and set up tents, we were pretty spooked about getting caught by cops or homeless people but we made it out unscathed for about 5 years. have a bunch of good memories from that

the other guy mostly answered it but basically most places dont even allow camping in the first place, then a lot of the other places do allow camping but in more of a car camping sense (huge noisy campground with tons of drunk people)

the few places that do allow camping are by permit which is mostly just an annoyance, the limitation is you have to camp at a specified campground, the benefit is at these campgrounds there are only backpackers there and not car campers

also for almost all of the parks above there is no fires allowed

if you go to the national forest or state forest areas you are a lot better off, you obtain a permit(basically they are just handed out), then you can go camp wherever you want and make fire wherever you want as long as you arent a jackass

its honestly a travesty you cant get your gear and camp somewhere without having to jump through a ton of hoops. id honestly love to hear their reasoning for all of this garbage

With National Forests you don't need a permit at all most of the time. Dispersed Camping is allowed most anywhere for up to 16 consecutive nights before you have to pack up and move to another sight (I think it has to be 3 to 5 miles from where you previously camped), certain protected nature or high traffic areas may require a permit however.

i use and external frame so theres a tent and a sleeping pad on the outside, it looks like im ready to go cross country and shit.
but the only places close to me a day trails for mountain bikes and people
i guess i still care about what people think about me on thhe trail ...

National Forest rules are the same no matter what state you're in because it's Federal jurisdiction, not state.

Basic dispersed camping rules apply across the board for National Forest land.

That's just not true. I can think of many examples of cases where you have a federally managed area typically associated with "free use" where a permitting system was put in place to limit usage. There are so many areas in California like this that practically all of the wilderness of that state is barred off by the gates of bureaucracy. However, other states are not immune. Two examples off the top of my head: one is a wilderness area, and the other is just BLM land, nothing really special.
