I’ve lit off a few of those just-add-water ration heaters and they get fuckin hot. I was honestly surprised how effective they are. Good option if absolutely no fire is allowed. But yeah keep the food separated from it. Probably not too harmful, they don’t give off too much of a nasty smell, but best to avoid anyway.

Just go cold.

There are several meals that don't need heat, tinned ham cock, fish cock, Freshe meals...lots. And if you want a dehydrated meal most can be prepared with cold water, they just require longer soak. I do oatmeal and other cereals this way by putting them in a belt pouch mid day and strapping it to my pack belt. The agitation from walking has them well hydrated by the time I strike camp in the afternoon.

I have, but it was temporary and it was for one very specific area with unusually dry weather conditions, following a year with intense fires. OP is full of shit.
