What is "trespassing" in the US like? I've only been to Britain and the Nordics where you can go anywhere reasonable. What is this like the US?

It means someone will come out and politely fuck you off their property if you are on it. Most people with any significant amount of land with have “private property” signs posted at its edges. I believe if a landowner does not have property markers posted or it is otherwise not obvious you are on someone else’s land, you will not face any legal repercussions for trespassing.

If you don't trespass during hunting season and dont leave a mess you're usually ignored.
The prime property to trespass on in the US is usually managed by DNR or the state...Things like rural airports and logging roads being prime targets for stealth camping.
Private land in Montana and Wyoming is usually a bad idea to trespass on though...it mostly got bought by paranoid millionares.

IIRC some areas in the USA let you designate 'No Trespassing' using paint marks, no signs needed. Just something to keep in mind if true.

isnt the biggest difference that anywhere worth going in usa is public land or national park and if you step on private property you are walking on someones farmland or close to their house
vs
scandics where bumfuck nowhere land high in the mountains are privately owned but its detatched and far away from where the landowners live and only "theirs" due to ancient rights?
and thats the land included in right to roam not developed land or where we live.

Not really the case out West. There are a lot of huge landowners who own some premium property and are often out-of-towners. There IS a lot of public land so its not too much of an issue but it is an issue...
