There are so many of these nutters out where I live, they aren't rural people so much as people driven into rural areas. They don't have farms they live on trash land, they don't have tools or trades mostly they're labourers or trade things like firewood and scrap metal.
The reason they're always trying to lure tourists in is because the locals all fear and are repulsed by them, and their overly friendly nature belies loneliness rather than hospitality.
Remember the three step rule, it's likely you will encounter loons, but unlikely anyone will recommend you a loon. Even loons won't recommend other loons, a loon will insist on helping you personally because they don't really know anyone and want to get personally involved.
Three normal people in a row will pass you along to someone without a second thought, who couldn't? A loon.
Only this afternoon I met a loon who showed me where he kept all his secret weapons, his car axe, his hiden metal pipes, his personal knife, his.. murder knife. These are real people, there are a lot of them, they've got absolutely no self awareness and most of what they tell you is patently untrue
