The pacific coast stretching from east panama to southern colombia has captured my interest for a while. This is one of the wettest places on earth so ponchos and water-proofing everything from fire starters to other sensitive equipment is necessary. I would just walk across the coastline and then use a small boat exploring these massive mangrove forests. Colombia is also known for its high density of edible plants, so knowing how to identify and prepare them can go a long way in stretching out an expedition's time table.

I wanna go here. Is it affordable to get up there? Seems like an awesome place to spend a week in the summer taking bird photos. I imagine you can just backpack out for a few days so long as you avoid polar bears

Pretty sure that's water surface they didn't color properly. I've seen it before on radar vs. sat images of places I know personally. Looks like flooded valleys north of it a bit at a similar elevation. Also look at the colored river east of Chazuta, see how there's a smaller flat basin there too? The sat image is showing trees so it's likely a shallow bog/swamp.

Probably not a glitch, probably just absolutely insane landscape. As for the region you pointed out, I've noticed many of the mountains are simply shaded in. There are no real close images of this area.

What is the appeal of bird photos? In a jungle, it makes sense. Very colorful, majestic, great contrasts. But for a cold shithole? Half of the picture will be white specs scattered over the landscape. All bird shit. All the birds will look the same, and there will be 1000000 of them. What is the point? Looking closely at it, there's roads penetrating the interior on a lot of the ridgelines. There's probably still cool shit to see there, it's real jungle.

Very. I used to live there. There's villages bloody everywhere.
Also it saw some of the most action in WWII, there's tunnels and wreckage, bun emplacements everywhere.
They've had 2 volcanic eruptions since '92, so a lot of it got fucked up. Rabaul, the capital ceased to exist in any meaningful way, so they just moved up the road to Kokopo, and then a different volcano erupted and messed that up, though not total devastation. Yet.
