Thinking about picking up a pair of these Australian Army surplus boots, as I am struggling to find a boot that suits the Australian weather well and these seem decent and affordable, I mean if the army uses them then how bad can they be?

Does anyone have any experience buying surplus gear (not just boots)? How was it? Worth it?

Army gear is optimised for being the bare minimum quality required to get the job done

And that job isn't the same job as you'll be doing as a solo outdoorsman

Consider the ptsd guy on alone Australia compared to the guy who failed air force pilot school but was a way better survivor

i live in a military town. it is always surprising to me how little military people know about the outdoors. you have to remember the modern soldier is almost never in any sort of outdoors situation and when they are they are surrounded by support and are in constant contact with help should anything go wrong. at most they have a few weeks of survival training that they can barely remember.

I feel you, I'm a southern Euro boots for hot weather are hard to find, every fucking thing is either made of synthetic garbage that falls apart if a thorn sees it, have all kinds of useless liners that are not needed in mostly dry hot environment or are designed to appeal 13 yo redditors. Pic related a potentially good boot ruined by the retarded transformers sole and unnecessary padding.

Yes. It's worth it particularly if you live near a base.
Blow a little money on some goodies then ask the guy at the gear shop if he has good condition stuff.
A lot of troops only need some stuff for one class, they buy and sale it back after the school. So a lot of mid stuff if floated between people, that isn't nessiceryly an indication of what can be gotten.
Ok so now you have lightly used stuff, ask what sew shops are recommended. The sewers are reasonabley priced and can turn GI gear into some bad ass custom gear. They know how to work on different fabrics and make it durable.

Tldr: yes surplus is good, make friends with the store owner and get it customized.

Military boots are pretty amazing desu, if you're discounting the quality of the footwear because of the people that wear it you're basically outing yourself as a very low IQ.

Depends on the gear and where it's made. German/Swiss/Austrian boots tend to be good. USGI sniffle gear, the waffle top in particular, is a pretty nice creature comfort item. Shelters usually aren't as good as commercial ones, but some of them are decent deals - there's a particular bivy bag the Dutch use that's something like $800 commercial, or $200 for a surplus one. The surplus packs can be good depending on exactly which you get, commercially available but military focused packs from reputable manufacturers like Tactical Tailor or Hill People Gear are better and more durable than outdoorsman focused stuff, but it's expensive.

Do your research and you can find alright stuff that's cheaper and/or better than commercial, don't do your research and you'll just be carrying shit that's too goddamn heavy for no benefit.
