They're fine on trail in summer. If you do any sustained class 3 or higher they're awful.

I don't trail run but I cross mountain snow all the time. It's super soft and you just stab your foot into it. You can't even slide on it half the time cause it's like 20 grit sandpaper and it stops you plus all you do is stab your foot or hand in it then it compacts on itself and acts as a foot/hand hold. What sucks is it reflects the sun up your legs and gives you sun burn and you need welding goggles to see.

If you look over at the mountains over on the other side that's what I went through on this side to get there. I've tried sliding down them for fun but you stick. My pack has a poncho and I couldn't even slide on it.

Sometimes, yes.
If you have hard toes on your shoes you can kick into the incline and walk up it almost like stairs but in the summer that same slope could be scree which is miserable to climb.
