Is one of the SKUs on the box the same as the SKU for an individual reel? That’s probably how they fucked up. One time at Lowe’s I found some diamond saw blades in a bag of like 3 but were on the shelf like it was sold that way. The employee was obviously retarded and didn’t open the bag before hanging it on the peg. But they had the first and last blade so you couldn’t actually scan the single item SKU unless you opened them up, and the SKU on the bag wouldn’t scan at the register.

I bought a rod online from them once and it was in a fucking 8ft x 1ft x 1ft box that was so haggard by the time it got to my door. No, and the shore fishing is also pretty crap unless you like standing shoulder to shoulder with hordes of retirement-age Mexicans and flips on piers as the coast guard will REEE at you from their helicopters when you try to fish jetties or rocky coast because if they let fishermen go there then tourists will follow. Better to just go up the coast a bit; even going as far as Torrey Pines things mellow out considerab. If you want to fish freshwater in Sandy Eggo without a boat you're pretty much fucked but on the other hand if you have even a kayak there are a few reservoirs out east that are passable and have panfish and trout and bass and catfish - not to mention just fishing off of beaches.

If you decide to get into saltwater fishing, BY FAR the best place to go to get kitted out is Squidco. They have their own in-house brand of rods (Varmac) that punch way above their price tag and on top of that they have everything that the other fishing stores do but for about 10-20% less. I spent $30 on a combo from them and it has been

Even a 2mm ring has about a 25lb tensile strength and because it's rigid I find it easier to tie to. It also stands up to chafing infinitely better than a loop of leader, and if you're the kind of person who re-ties their tippets a lot then this can matter more than you think it does. I have a number of pre-tied rigs on tippet material with a loop that are really easy to get on and off and you can also use tippet rings for dropper rigs for the same purpose.

Depends on your visibility, IME. In dirty water I've caught stockers without a leader at all but I don't know how well that trick would work in an alpine lake.

I want to get into fishing and have some poles and tackle. If you watch his videos, you'll see that he catches bass, carp, catfish, walleye, etc. at the spillway. He does some creek fishing and catches bass, bluegill, catfish, etc. There's also a number of ponds, a lake, and plenty of spots to fish along the river.
In terms of fishing rods, I have:
Shimano AX Fightin' Star AX-2602; 6 ft length; medium action; 6-15 lb line weight; 1/4 - 3/4 oz lure weight
Daiwa Samurai SA 662 MRS 6'6"; Medium; 6-14 lb line weight; 1/4 - 3/4 oz lure weight
Shakespeare Amphibian AMPHSP562M-B; 5'6" length; Medium; 6-12 lb line weight
I just went to the sporting goods store today and bought 15 lb line, which was recommended to me for fishing at the spillway. I assume it would work best on the Shimano, but is the Shimano good enough for that kind of fishing? I don't know what line weight is on the rods right now, but I used to catch panfish with them.
Pic rel is the my gear in my trunk. I have the bags on top so that they don't rattle while I'm driving. I don't think anything is being bent. Is this halal?

Forgot to mention, get a bottle of mend-it. It's superglue for soft plastics. Get a toothpick and apply it with that so you don't contaminate the main bottle with the brush it comes with, once even a little bit of silicone gets in there it's done. Toss the toothpick when done.

Apply it to the tear, put it together, good as new literally. I've never had one rip texas-rigged, idk what you're doing wrong, even strong arm side casting it I never had one rip.

you can use any it doesn't matter. I would personally use the longest one. shorter rods are good for places with low hanging trees where it's harder to cast longer rods.

It really depends on what kind of fish it is
Tilapia is mushy so it would disintegrate in oil
Cod and shark on the other hand are thick with big muscle groups so their fillets are nice to fry

Also I heard that Asian carp have very different textural qualities than European carp, and that common carp need to be flushed in a stone pond to remove off flavors

Yeah its pretty similar to financing a car, different rates and stuff and different nature of the loan depending on if its financed by bank/credit union or by the dealership. It is convenient but it is pretty costly to upkeep a boat and fuel it. My brother has a bass tracker that I love going fishing with him in, but me myself I've never pulled the trigger on buying a motorcraft despite being able to afford it. I still love my Old Town guide 147 canoe. If I need to go long distance I'll mount a 2hp outboard on it, otherwise I love slipping up on the bass silently, despite the work paddling. Still can't go in the main channel in say, Guntersville Lake, or somewhere similar due to waves, but most of the best fishing is in the coves and I prefer small river fishing anyway, where you put in upriver and take out down river. Canoe is best for that anyhow (or kayak)

Just getting tired of drifting all over the place and keeping the boat in and out of neutral to stop the current from taking me away from where I want to fish. Let alone the dropping of the anchor most likely scaring the fish away from the spot I find. See these guys using spot lock on their boats standing in the front casting effortlessly and easily going around shorelines while I am always shifting from neutral to drive just to stay on location is getting frustrating. Don’t get me wrong my little aluminum is better than having no boat and being forced to shore fish, also good for taking to crown land spots or hard to reach places for camping and fishing on crown lake in deep innawoods lakes but fuck. Was considering a kayak but I think the use I’ll get out of it will be similar to the aluminum, kind of just want a decent fishing boat with a nice front trolling motor with spot lock and call it a day.

You can use almost any pound line on any rod, it depends on what kind of fishing you're doing. The rod recommends that range of line strength because that is the kind of fishing typically done with that length of rod. I like to use as light of line as I can get away with, I use 2lb test for bream and crappie, 4lb test for smallmouth and trout, 6lb test for largemouth, and 10+ lb for catfish. Some people like to use heavier than needed line for security of the fish not breaking the line. This can potentially affect catch rate as fish may be more likely not to commit to strikes on heavier line. Professional freshwater fisherman will commonly use 17+ lb test so that they can just horse fish in and cast again as quick as possible. Line strength can also affect the action of certain lures. I'd recommend to most people 4lb for ultralight, 8lb for bass, and 14+ for catfish

that doesn't matter. those ratings are just there to give you an idea on what type of forces will be required to bend the rod completely over to a possible breaking point, and they often are inaccurate anyways. what matters more is the lure rating because otherwise working certain lures can be hard to do properly, if they are too heavy or too light. still, even that is often inaccurate to a degree. as long as you are using your drag properly, the rod will never bend enough to break, even if you have 60lb line on it, the fish will pull drag before the rod can stress far enough to snap. 15lb line is very strong, and sometimes a pain because of the stiffness/high memory. 10lb line is still strong if you use your drag, and it's much more manageable. 15lb is good for things like catfish though, because it being thicker helps with abrasion resistance and knot strength.

These are good for crankbaits and stuff too, band the treble hooks together on baits with more than one hook and they don’t get all fuckin tangled in the tackle box.

However, don’t leave them on baits with rubber skirts or don’t store the wacky rigs with the band on them. Certain plastics and rubbers don’t like eachother and the rubber bands will melt into a gooey mess all over the skirt of your spinnerbaits.

Musky eat more than once a month, usually bigger fish eat fewer meals (especially during the summer and winter) but consume larger prey. They can go weeks without eating but research seems to indicate big fish still eat at least once a week. I do the figure 8 for conventional, or an oval while fly fishing every cast and have caught 60%+ of my musky doing so. I'm a pretty seasoned musky angler which makes this so frustrating.

I got out on my kayak and managed like 6 nice size sand bass and a calico. I sacrificed one tube jig to the rock/kelp for the trip. What sort of fly rod would be best suited for throwing those bigger flies? The freshwater trophy fish in Southern California are striped bass and the 10+lb LMB. There is a spot with nice catfish that I like. The catch is that the only way there is to hike two miles along a nature trail to get there. I would like to take some of the fish home to eat next time I go, but I'm not sure how to go about it. If I fillet the fish there, I would need a cooler full of ice to keep them fresh on the hike back. If I try to keep the whole fishes on a stringer all the way back I'm pretty sure they'll go stiff. I really like this spot, the trail is nice and the fishing is good. Should I catch eating fish at a different spot? Or is there an easy way to keep the fish fresh on the hike back that I'm missing? I started trying directly to braid, haven't noticed any difference in bites but a huge advantage in line sensitivity and capacity. If you're fishing clear, pressured water, I bet it makes a difference to have a leader, but I don't fish in those conditions so I'll take the simplicity of just braid. My method so far is use the same pound test braid as you would have otherwise wanted for mono (so it's much thinner line in braid) and if the color fades on your braid, like it seems to inevitably do, then recolor it with a black sharpie for a couple feet above your lure

I got out again today, fishing the same creek. This time, I waded in. I caught what I think is a walleye.
I was using the shitty Shakespeare Amphibian and couldn't cast well because my finger kept bumping the metal bar on the reel. Plus, I haven't casted in years, save for a couple days ago. I should have taken a different rod. I read both links in the OP and would like to do more reading or watch some videos, specifically stuff about different equipment and how/where to use it. Recs?
I almost fell in several times and probably shouldn't have come after a storm, but I had a good time. I might get better sandals in the future.

Yes and no. Did you catch a stocker? I do think color beyond light and dark is overrated when it comes to dry fly fishing. It’s more about profile, how it sits in the water compared to what’s hatching and drift. I’ve had days where I can’t keep them off my flies and others where they are activity rising on a hatch and I can’t get a take. Stockers are dumb as hell and easy to catch in general you can even tie a pellet fly and catch them on that when they are first released. If you can’t catch them on the dry fly swing to a wet fly fished high in the water column and you will kill it. Fish are a lot less selective on wet flies than dry flies for some reason.
You can catch fish on the dry fly when they aren’t rising it’s just a lot less productive.

You know, I am not sure. The it’s a smaller stream that is known for not being stocked, but it was a rainbow, so there’s a possibility it swam up from the reservoir. I was nymphing when I noticed it hammering the surface upstream, so I changed over my leader, threw a pmd over to it and it took it on my fifth or so drift. It was so awesome and now I’m bummed I live around streams that are not great for dry fly fishing. Do you make your own leaders by chance? What kinda formula do you use?

I don’t get too fancy when tying leaders. For trout I use the Gary borger unibody leader. Super simple to tie and very effective. If you haven’t used tippet rings I can’t recommend them enough for trout fishing. Makes life a lot simpler.

Fly rods are the best travel rods because they pack up super small (4 pieces of a 9' rod broke down is small) and the tackle takes up very little space. Only downside is you might need multiple rods to handle the different sized fish you're going after and fly rods are expensive... but based on the fact you get to travel to all these places I don't think cost is much concern. >>2603195

IDK why, but on my first and only trout fishing trip in western NC I could only catch fish on dry flies. I tried nymphs while my wife was using dry caddis flies and the fish simply ignored every nymph while going for every caddis my wife was throwing out. They were stockers so maybe that was the difference. I ended up outfishing my lady (barely) just using a bunch of caddis flies and stripping them watching the trout follow them before finally eating. I did end up tying on a #6 size stone fly that I was stripping in rather than letting float over the fish that had some results. I just can't into nymphs apparently, maybe because I am so used to catching panfish in eastern NC that love a good dry fly and are effortless to catch.

Yes and no, a double uni is an actual knot. Fish n fool is essentially the strongest knot known currently for mono and braid. The doubled loop matters. They do knot strength competitions.

Fly fishing is this... $7-10 for 9 ft of line, it's absolutely retarded. Sure they do a special chemical taper but even the line you buy to make your own leaders tied together is more expensive. Sucks because you kinda have to use that line because of the stiffness properties and the tippets are usually a lot stronger per thickness, so I guess it does provide some benefit vs just getting spools of standard berkley line in various # ratings. Maybe I'll start tying in 1ft of berkley trilene to the end of my fly line as a fly line to fly connection and see if I can catch some fish for the lulz then shitpost here afterwards

my biggest carp since moving! 26" and 10 lbs. He fought really hard for how small he is. He took about 15 minutes to land. I hooked into what felt like a 20 pounder in this water 2 years ago and the guy broke my hook in half. So I'm excited for even bigger fish. My record at my other fishing hole was 17 lbs. and 29". But again, I hooked into a fucking coffee table of a carp that was every bit of 25 lbs. or more. But a tree had literally fallen into the creek the week prior from a storm, and the carp wrapped itself up in the fallen tree and broke off. But it came to surface 3 times just to show me how big it was lol. I use hair rigs and size 8 or size 10 hooks on flurocarbon leader, usually 17 lbs. or 19 lbs. with a 55 lbs. braid mainline. I usually bait with bread and corn, and chum with the same. I'm in north america so boilies aren't really a thing I have access to, and the carp here already know bread and corn is food. I would have to chum a lot of bait before I could get them trained on the boilies. So more natural baits are the way I'm approaching it. There's better parts of the lake to fish. The north end I think I'll really hook into a big one. If anyone else carp fishes and has any recommendations I love to hear them. I'm also looking for carp recipes. I've been considering eating a few under 20". I found this really good looking romanian baked carp recipe where you bake the fillets in tomato sauce and red wine. Probably going to try it in the next month

fuuuuck that sounds good. but my dad stole my smoker last year (midwest family politics). I have barbequed over hickory wood chunks before and it produced a lot of smoke. Still cooked faster and the flame was hotter than in the smoker. But it might be a good alternative until I have the ability to improve my setup. I could probably do a really low heat, covered with barely any airflow, all wood chunks. Probably still cook the fish in an hour, but it'll probably taste really good.

As the other anon said, bleed it out first. I like to filet 'em and leave the skin on. Cut slices down to the skin along the entire filet, leaving only narrow gaps between each slice. This way the bones will be less of an issue once you cook it.
Season generously from both sides with salt, pepper, sweet paprika powder and garlic paste. Let it sit with the seasoning for at least 30 min. Toss it in flour, put oil and butter into a pan, fry until the skin is crispy.

I've used the chod rig with great success before but if you're lazy just put on a hook and a weight and you'll likely have success.
They love anything rich in carbs. I've caught a lot using bread or chickpeas but my favorite bait has got to be briefly cooked potatoes (they're neat). Corn works too but isn't as good in my experience.

I’m having trouble getting back into fishing. I’ve been trying to get back into it as an adult and having no luck over the years. Freshwater btw, going for largemouths, peacock, snakehead. I really want to get a baitcaster and a better rod and set up a small fishing backpack but I can’t justify the investment if I’m not able to catch anything most days over a 3 hours period. Any advice? Most of my gear is pretty old and I was thinking new lures and shit would be a good start, no idea what to even get I see so much variability in the types of life’s available.
I hate crank baits btw. I prefer soft plastics. If anyone could point me in the right direction of a few pretty decent lures and what rigs to use I would appreciate it. I have no hobbies as an adult and I’m trying to get back into the one I used to love, pretty depressing for it for it to go no where now that I’m trying to be not depressed…
I really don’t get this, I used to catch a fish within every 10 casts now it’s nothing. Pic very unrelated.

Find the unpressured spots. It’s so hard to catch good fish at the popular lake at a park or a canal that the nogs have fished out. Go find some places with “No Trespassing” signs.

Also summer sort of sucks for LMB, the water is so warm that you need to get em deep or get them when a cold front and storm is rolling in or right at dusk when they come up to eat.

Pic related is a snakehead from a canal behind some moving and storage place that you would never see unless you worked there. If I fish that same canal system along the walking trail and bike path, I won’t get shit but maybe some 8” largemout.

All of Weston is fishin holes. Tons of canal access behind businesses on the north end of Lauderdale and Pompano. I’ve done pretty good at some of the lakes out in Miramar like Miramar Blvd where it runs along the Turnpike.

Google Maps is your friend. Go out to those business parks on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

That’s what I did to catch the baby 6” peacocks and largemouths I was getting a few weeks ago. I got told to leave within 20 minutes. I should really renew my fishing license so I don’t have to worry about them calling cops out. At least then if told to leave I can rotate to another side that’s technically someone else’s property

Also don’t be so quick to jump on the baitcaster. If your shit is old and crappy, go spend ~$100 on a decent spinning combo from Bass Pro and put some 10lb-15lb Power Pro line on it, fish some Texas rigs with that. Baitcasters are hard to learn with unless you’re using >1/2oz lures, so you’re going to get pissed with a 1/4oz Texas rig on there.

For the snakeheads, my #1 lure is Mepps and other inline spinners like Rooster Tails. Their mouth isn’t that big, a Mepps Agila #2 or #3 works great, run them along the top of underwater grass or other structure and the snakeheads jump out and grab them.

Also snakeheads seem pretty smart. If they see you, they won’t bite. If they hit the bait once and you don’t hook them, they won’t go for it the rest of the day. If you miss one, just move to the next spot. Only time I ever got snakeheads to hit a bait more than once is when they’re defending their fry.

This is exactly what I’ve been wondering. They’re freaky fuckers. I think they’re definitely smarter than most fish. I managed to hand catch a 2” one as a kid and kept it in a 10 gallon for a while. It would watch me and follow me along the glass. I had a beta in another tank and at some point it escaped it’s 10 gallon and got in with the beta.

Look for weed patches and fish on the deeper end of the weeds, the bass like to hang out there so they can snag baitfish that come out of the weeds.

These Zoom lizards do wonders, there is some anon from TX who was always getting huge bass and he loved these things. Look for the 6” size in “Chartruese Pepper” and thank me later. Zoom baby brush hogs are really good too, go with something black or purple or dark blue in cloudy water, then go with something natural like watermelon in clearer water, and then the chartruese always does good in that clear but brown stained water.

There’s so many more variations and styles to fish. Don’t be in such a hurry to get a bunch of different things, slow down and find what works best for you in your waters.

The dry fly was what I caught 90% of the trout I got on my first trout fishing adventure in west NC. I live just east of Raleigh and in this area I think nymphs with an indicator above are easy money going for panfish either in a pond and stripping it in or in the rivers letting it drift. You'll also catch a shitload with of panfish with dry flies though. For carp this year, I've caught my first one on a nymph, second one on a dry, and third one on a dry that was water logged and about 6" deep... so I guess it is a tie between overwater and under? I only ever go for one when I see one since I'm really going for bass but fish for bluegill for fun when I don't get bites. On the bass side, I still kinda suck but I did get a huge one in the spring, probably 4-5 times heavier than any other bass I've ever caught since I usually get dinks. I still have no idea what kind of flies to use to get LMB but I think streamers are the way to go since I've caught all but one on streamers, the one above water being a popper.

look up hair rigs. I use a swivel and a leader. On the leader I tie the hook on with a snell knot. But the running end of the line that comes out the bottom of the snell knot, leave it like 4 or 5 inches long and tie it into a figure 8 on a bite knot. I find corn is okay as bait, but it's great as chum. Throw out 3-10 bread balls, and a half handful of corn over where you're going to be fishing.

you're gonna catch some big fish anon. Remember that carp have soft mouths and fight very very hard. Make sure you have your drag set appropriately and don't use a hook too big to fit in their mouth. Sometimes carp can bite really really softly when they're inactive, but when they're active they WILL yank your pole straight into the water. So keep on eye on that line.

Also the more regular you chum a spot the better for you. If you constantly fish the same spot, and chum in the same spot on a regular schedule the fish will learn it. It was surprisingly a lot harder than I thought it was gonna be. But now, now I am the master of bait. I will never ever run out of worms. I am now contemplating selling worms on the side.

Never had carp but I love grilled catfish. I like mine with salt, pepper, and cayenne. I grill mine hot and fast over charcoal and whatever wood I got. Usually oak or pecan. Filleted and skin on.

With that said... you cannot beat a Shimano or Daiwa for a budget reel. it's just facts. they've been doing it too long and the trickle down r&d makes even their $30 reels last years if you take care of your stuff. for $39 you can get a Shimano Catana FE, or even cheaper a Shimano FX FC for $19. if you want a more robust reel at the expense of less smoothness compared to a shimano, the Penn Pursuit IV 2500 is $49 and bigger sizes are a little more has sealed ball bearings. that's good for if you fish in rain or don't maintain your reels as well as you should.

Does anyone else struggle with choosing to use soft plastics/jigs because you're worried the fish won't be able to find it without something that either makes a ton of noise or has something spinning on it?
My theory was something like a Texas rig shouldn't work because if the water clarity is low, I have to pass the lure by the fish within eyesight otherwise they would never see it, which feels much harder to do than just alerting them to the lure with rattles or spinners so they investigate the noise. But I know that theory is bullshit because I fish a Texas rig worm and wacky worm in murky, moving water with pretty decent success. I could understand if it had a paddle tail, but it's just a senko, so I'm not sure why it works but I know it does.
What gives? Do they sense stuff in the water much better than I'm giving them credit? Are they not as stupid as I think they are? Again, I think soft plastics are really good and I have wanted to try using them more this year which has yielded very good results, I just need an explanation for where my thinking about the fish is wrong/explanation of why they work

Threw out one of those nightcrawlers I picked last night, and caught a good 16" largemouth! I almost never target bass but these nightcrawlers are the perfect size for it. I just hook them twice right in the middle like a wacky rig. Toss it out, and just real slow retrieve pick it off the bottom, let it fall, slow retrieve, let it fall. First cast this guy smacked it right when it came up to the surface on retrieve! Haven't caught a bass in at least a year. Just not the fish I go to the lake thinking about catching. When I was a kid I rode my bike like a half mile down the dirt road to my geriatric ancient ww2 veteran neighbors pond to catch largemouth and bluegills. I'd either wear a backpack and put my tacklebox in it, and put the rod in it so the tops sticking out the top of the backpack like a radio operator, and zip the zippers up to hold it center. That or I would take the tacklebox handle and put it over one handle bar and hold it with left hand, right hand is holding rod over right handlebar. More holding the rod than the bar. Backpack way is more stable, but in my years of brain development since my youth. I think you should break down the pole sections and rubber band them together so they dont separate and do before as said. Also tying some kind of string between the zippers really makes sure one doesn't sag down and then you're riding like

I would say a 10wt (flies under 10") or 12wt.. 12wts and big fly specific 11wts are so light now there is almost no reason to go with a 10wt for big flies IMO (I own 2). I would personally use a 2 hand overhead fly rod like a Chippewa River Custom or R.B Meiser. Paired with a Spey running line + custom sink tip, Big Game Depthfinder, or something life a 12wt Rio OBS INT for shallow or for from shore. A set up like this lets you cast as far and as frequently as possible with big flies. I have 2 setups like this for Musky and Pike.

You can tie flies that glide or swim pretty easily. A beast fly will be similar multi-jointed swimbait, glide flies swim more like chopper style glides (Chad Shad or Darter), and a gamechangers are a mix between the two but doesn't do either action as well. The main advantage to the game changer is color matching. You can buy the brushes in white and then color the fly exactly how you want it with chartpak markers.
