What kind of binoculars do you guys use during your /out/ shenanigans?
I want to get some cheap and light ones for watching birds and the night sky

Simmons ProSport 10x25, got them at Cabelas for twenty muttbucks. They're pretty compact but still have decent magnification.

7x50s for getting started in astronomy. Do not get the kind with red coating.

I've tried a lot of different cheap ones for casual birding. Current favorite is a Tasco Sierra 10x42. Celestron 12x60s are decent for the price. They have awkwardly long eye relief, but that's good when using them on a tripod. You don't have to touch and wiggle them with your face.

Hontry brand from Amazon. It's decent quality for relatively cheap which is what I want so I can actually use and abuse them and not worry too much about my precious equipment.

Bushnell 10x25s with homeade dust covers (underwear band with duct tape both inside and out to avoid tacky adhesive sticking to anything. Gutted paracord ran through the bottoms to keep the covers attached and as a neck line. If you are scouting, stalking, or in an observing post these will be just fine for you. Lightweight, take up very little space, but pretty effective, it'll just be a little dark if it's nighttime and theres not a whole lot of ambient light.

I've always used cheap chinkshit optics, is there really a big difference if you drop triple digit sums on stuff like Bushnells?

it depends. if you're just looking off into the distance at landscapes not as much, but fine details like edges on buildings or small animals yeah. I wouldn't say it's some massive step up the more expensive you go at a certain point though, more of a gain of inches after the $150-200 mark. it matters just as much to buy the right objective lense size for what you plan to use them for if you want to maximize "performance." the other big thing is you get great warranties with some of the higher end brands, lik with Vortex.
