I'm going to colorado on business and will only have one day to myself, I read that you need at least a day just to acclimatize yourself to the elevation which means I won't have time to hike up

There is no strict set of rules for acclimating, altitude affects everyone differently, but in general you wanna give yourself at least a day.
Just read up on the effects of altitude sickness, and be alert for them when you go.
Start hiking early, and get off the mountain before any afternoon storms.
Also, if you’re going any time soon, it’s still gonna be snow covered so you shouldn’t try it if this is your first time doing a 14er

It depends on the technical difficulty of the hike. The more you will have to exert yourself and the more difficult the tasks you have to do, the more acclimation you need. Your cardiovascular health is also an important factor. It’s doable for some people and others can do it with even less preparation.

In October of 2014 I landed a red eye in Denver at 4:30 AM and was drinking a beer at the summit of Handies Peak at 3 pm. It was absolutely brutal, despite my good cardiovascular capacity, but I live at 1000 feet, and was (and am) 30 lbs overweight. Even though I’m in roughly the same shape now as I was 9 years ago, being 36 instead of 27 means I’m not sure I would be able to keep the pace I needed to be back at my car by 6:30 pm sunset. Be realistic about your fitness and capabilities and you should be successful, at least if you can get a parking spot.
