Horse flies are the biggest, land on you with a thump and take a few seconds to bite. Seem to be attracted to the color black and rapid movement. If you're sitting around they quickly disperse.
Deer flies are a bit smaller and quicker, tend to use kamikaze like attacks. Dive bomb into you at full speed trying to instantly bite. Seem to be attracted to the color blue and rapid movement. If you're sitting around they quickly disperse.
Buffalo gnats look like regular black flies with a little bump on their back. They sneak up on you, land, and bite the ever loving fuck out of you. Seem to be able to smell you like mosquitos. They slice you open with jagged assed mandibles to lap up your spilled blood. Swarms are known to suck animals dry. They are the worst of the worst, and as far as I've experienced are the only ones that draw blood. I admit I have pretty thick skin tho.
