Sad. I backpacked Joshua tree when it was about 85°. Not fun, it's dangerous. Had my big straw hat, 5L water, and was cooling off with water with felt amazing but stupid af. Nights were amazing though and worth jt

I think a lot of these people have no frame of reference for hiking in the desert. They've probably done 10+ mile hikes in other places, even with elevation changes, and they just assume since they were prepared for those they are prepared for these.

And loads of people don't look at weather conditions at all, let alone understand how temp humidity and wind affect water requirements.

I don't know how much of a difference it makes, but I've been cutting my water with gatorade this summer and it's been pretty good to me. Split a large gatorade between 2 48 oz nalgenes and filled the rest with water and I ended up drinking all of it by the end of my hike. I'm sure that to some degree I exacerbate my need for water by carrying an excessive amount of water but I don't think I've reached that tipping point yet. I also carry some ceralyte 70 packets in my first aid kit for emergency rehydration.
