I lived there for a short while. California is pretty great. It has a ton of different microclimates, often fairly close to one another. Even if the state were broken into northern, central, and southern parts, each part would still be top tier.

The biggest issue is how crowded everything is. The state as a whole is somewhat densely populated (ranked 11th in the US), though that’s a little misleading due to the dense mega cities. The mild weather doesn’t act as a filter, and there’s a long history of “outdoor recreation culture.” No matter where you are in the state, you’re only a couple hours drive from a city of 300k people. Not every trip needs to be an epic hiking adventure, but if you want to get away from the screaming kids and the BluTooth speakers then they have to be. Going to an old forest road in a national forest or blm land, building a fire, and having a fun weekend with your friends seems less likely due to the number of people wandering around.

Just don’t go to Yosemite expecting privacy is all I’m saying.

there's beaches, they are just set on lakes, or you can swim in many different clean rivers and creeks
you can do stand up paddleboard in some of the larger lakes, you can also, if you are fit, climb up the sides of the lake and then jump in
there's snowshoe, canaan valley, and timberline ski resorts but that's rich ppl shit

Gonna have the entire month of July off and will be driving around California with my Aunts house in Sacramento as a sort of basecamp. Looking to see some stuff but avoiding SoCal. Gonna see the obvious stuff like Yosemite with her but I'd like to know if there's anything less crowded I should check out on my own.

I am jealous. I spent all of last fall section hiking on the JMT and I got some amazing views of late summer turning into early fall with the last winter's frost still clinging to the higher elevations. I love driving past Rovana because I know I'm gonna see views rivaling Mammoth and Mono that filter fatties and normies with the 7-10 mile trek up the mountain pass. Even the Lowlands at the tail end of the Eastern Sierra are a sight to behold anytime outside Summer.
