So I've been diagnosed with central sleep apnea, meaning I need a special machine called an ASV Bipap to sleep properly.

Anybody on /out/ have any experience in extended trips while having to use a device like this? I can definitely function without it but i feel so much more refreshed with it

My aunt has that, and she drags one of those Anker portable power stations everywhere. It means she has a base load of like 15 lbs even before you start talking about other gear, so she doesn’t do much backpacking, but we’ve done boundary waters trips and she’s not a bigger burden than any other normal 55 year old woman, and she’d probably be a bigger burden without it, so I guess it’s fine. She gets 5 days out of the 2400wh unit, without using a solar panel. I suspect that a solar panel that would be reasonable to take camping wouldn’t refill the thing enough each night to give you indefinite charge life, but it would probably give you another 2-3 more days.

Eh I think I can get a smaller unit and then get a solar panel to throw on my pack. I know people do that with cell phones. Does suck I can't charge both. From what I know, you can get a smaller battery that lasts two nights without the humidifier, so I could probably do something like that. But I don't know shit about solar panels, I usually keep my phone off and only turn it on for emergencies

You remember how people with covid get really low blood oxygen levels but are still conscious and fine? That's how it is for me and sleep. My breathing slows way down when I lie in bed, even when I am still awake. I simply don't need to breath that often. Guided meditation usually doesn't work so well for me because I am inclined to go slower. Bottom line, I think we are just built different. I definitely wouldn't carry a machine while camping.

Pic related might be a better option. I was tempted to grab one for storm season and a lot of the reviews are from people who keep them around for their sleep apnea machines during power outages.

Not sure how many nights you would get per battery, but this brand sells car chargers too. Dig into reviews on Home Depot and Amazon and you could probably figure out if it’s worth it for you, not sure how many watts that machine pulls but a 6.0Ah battery is 108Wh and you could definitely toss 2 or 3 of those in a backpack without killing yourself.

This sounds like a lower power CPAP machine, Ryobi has cheap batteries compared to the other brands, but most of the major brands sell one of these.

not the worst idea. But it is a bit bulky. Those 4AH batteries seem to get 72 Wh if my math is correct. But I could probably cram a few of these in a pack and charge them with a solar panel slung over my pack or something I've seen those before.

95Wh, seems more friendly to outings and a larger capacity, but fuck me is it an expensive bitch. Pretty sure it's not too hard to get ~2 nights out of it. I don't have severe apnea issues or anything so I can always do without a night using it. I just get pretty fucking groggy.

Cheers though for the thoughts anon, I do have some Ryobi batteries laying around so it's not a bad solution, I might give it a go for my next outing

Well I know it's dumb but make sure you have an ASV, if you don't it's not treating you. Some docts are retarded and insist on bipap therapy as a treatment. Didn't work for me. I feel my heart rate constantly being higher despit ebeing in pretty good shape. shit sucks. Wish you luck friend, remember that apnea is something with pretty much no real treatment

Yeah there’s tradeoffs with battery packs. Like a lot of the power tool packs need to be balanced for a ton of current and decent capacity. The 6.0Ah packs are actually the same size as the 4.0Ah packs because the higher capacity cells can put out some current when there’s two rows paralleled. They could technically make like 3.5Ah packs that are half the size of the 4.0/6.0 packs, but those 3500mAh cells wouldn’t be great to run a sawzall, however those cells would run a lower power CPAP well, so you need to find the highest capacity cells that can handle the current you want to pull from it.

Depending on how the apnea interrupts your sleep you might do better with an oxygen concentrator, I think they use much less power. Your lungs don't need to work if you're pushing 30% o2 into them continuously.
