No, you can find hiking trails for free. If you want to use it purely for offline maps with your phone gps just use something like Organic Maps or exploit the Gaia maps bug which are both free. Or just pay 30 dollars. But if your going to pay you might as well choose Gaia instead, its maps are much more detailed.

Yes OP, all trails is great. I’d never go hiking without it. It’s fantastic for finding the coolest trails, no matter where you are.

Anon explain I'm a boomer and use paper maps, what is this Gaia GPS bug you speak of? I'm not seeing a way to use Gaia without buying a subscription.

I guess its not technically a "bug". But if you have a free Gaia account and zoom in on the trail you want to use while connected to the internet it will download/cache that part of the map locally to your phone. So you just have to scroll through the trail while zoomed in a bit, making sure it loads, then when you disconnect from the internet you can still see that part of the map offline. Most Gaias features are free and you just need to make a free account but downloading offline maps is a paid feature, but also one of the most useful ones, so if you have a specific trail you want to hike you could just do this instead of paying.
Ive done this probably 6 or 7 times and its worked well so far. I always have a backup offline map using Organic Maps but the Gaia Topographical maps are way better.

I just use OsmAnd, it's just a front-end for open street map so it's free, but the hiking view is great and it has every trail I've ever needed, plus stuff like camp sites and water sources. And the app is totally FOSS

It isn't just that it is tedious, it is that it requires you to do math in difficult terrain, and a paper map cannot show your position instantly in real time as a phone can, which is a big advantage.

I pay yearly for the lowrance app. It's nice for fishing from the bank cause it shows a lay of the lake and shows pints and channels. It's doesn't actually show fishing spots and you kinda have to o iq what you're looking at.
