Don't remove giant pieces of it at once, but gently scrape slices of it at a time, using a wooden club to gently beat the back of the chisel, similar to when using a wooden tattoo needle. Watch out for the grain. Use a rasp, then sand paper to make the finishing smooth. Apply oil and wax, then clean with cloth. Harden and slightly carbonize or darken the wood in a fire and use a fine stone to polish it, then oil it again and wax it. Rub with cloth or straw. That's how i make my bows and other wood work.
