I mix UL, traditional and milsurp together to what suits me. My boots and bag are technically military spec. My tent and sleeping pad are ultralight. My sleeping bag and fishing gear are traditional. And etc etc it goes on like this.

There is no underlying philosophy to what I use, personally. I just use what I enjoy. I own a couple modern rucksacks(ILBE and MOLLE2) but also own and use a lot of old equipment. I think you should just pick out gear that you like and think is practical. Everyone is influenced on their choices by different things.
