Have a Hennessey Hammock, forget the model but whatever. Lowest temperature I've ever done in it was 30 F. That was fairly cold, even with the underquilt. What kind of gear do people who sleep in lower temperatures use?

I'm looking at buying a set up, given that it's usually fairly warm and at a stretch I can buy an underquilt to suit me.

As i'm a newb I'm thinking of buying an all in one such as a hennessy hammock. does anyone know if they still will swap the standard tarp for the hex tarp at purchase for free?

If cost wasn't a factor I'd go straight for a Warbonnet BB, but the cost alone is more than a HH and doesn't have a tarp etc.

suggestions?

what are some good underquilts that are synthetic fill? I realize that down is warmer, lighter and more packable and all but living in the PNW I have come to the conclusion that anything that can get wet will get wet, and I'd like to not have to worry about losing all of my insulation.

I'm thinking about something rated around 20F because even though i'm not going to use it for anything below about 45 i am a cold sleeper. Does anyone have anything they'd recommend?

KAQ from arrowhead equipment sells rather nice synthetic insulated UQs. I got the jarbidge 2/3 UQ with Climex (sp?) insulation as opposed to the regular insulation that he uses to take me down to 0F and actually be lighter. I fucking love my UQ and have slept in it down to 30F and was pretty goddamn warm. On another night I had my ex girlfriend with me at night and with her on top of me with the UQ underneath I pretty much came.

It's pretty convenient, but it holds heat about as well as you'd expect. I wouldn't suggest it if you get particularly cold winters like we do here

I did that several years ago. Concrete walls, so just two holes with wall plugs and hooks held it.

After some time I did some adjustments and new knots. Because of a shitty knot the rope snapped and I fell on the floor with a pretty loud HNGGGGGGGGGGGGGROOOARRR. Must have sounded hilarious to the old couple living downstairs.

But hey, there's no way a hammock can be tightened enough if it's attached to walls. Some kind of frame should be built for it. At least for a full night's sleep.

I live in the countryside now so not my problem any more.

I might be misreading this, but is that practical? I always use a insulation blanket. Does the trick fine.

tarpwise, you want something that makes a 100% sure that you don't get wet in case of rain. I usually take my 3x4m one.

Yeah, I have a nicer hammock at home that reduces 'nut freezing' (as compared to this POS) but it turns out the flaws of the fishnet hammock - which I purchased for $5 USD in Saigon - are actually benefits in Africa.

depends on how much coverage you want. 3mx3m seems fairly common.
Figure out the length of the hammocks ridgeline and make sure the tarp has adquate over hang

Full Warbonnet setup. Blackbird with Mamajamba tarp. I carry my very light and packable Marmot Nanowave 55 bag, and a thin fleece blanket. Keeps me warm down to about 45 degrees. Anything lower and it helps to have an underquilt or pad under me, and a heavier bag.

Hey there /hg/. I'm thinking of setting up shop and making underquilts. I've got a plan in mind that makes the shape more appropriate to avoid certain areas being bunched up and other areas being more effective at trapping heat, something which other companies don't seem to do with all underquilts being rectangular.

i just tested out a different method of keeping myself warm last night as opposed to a sleeping pad or underquilt
i was walking through walmart looking for inspiration, and i saw a bunch of car sun shades. Since they are designed to insulate, and were only $3, i picked up a "jumbo" sized one, and went home.
I got back from class at about 10:30pm, and immediately set up my hammock, bug net, and sleeping bag. I slid the sun shade between the hammock and the sleeping bag. I was pleased to see the sun shade wrapped around the sides of my body since it was 26" wide, so the problem some people have with the sides of the hammock compressing the sides of the sleeping bag wasn't an issue. Also, at 62" long, my 6'2" frame was insulated from my heels to the back of my neck, with my pillow insulating my head. It got down to about 30 degrees last night, and I was totally comfortable.
i figure you could use one around the campfire to reflect heat towards you as well, so there's that

Because it's not just some fabric gathered end hammock. Mine is a 1.7 double layer, they are bug netted, come with tree straps, a nice integrated shelf, amsteel ridgeline, and the design allows you lay off angle making you more flat and thus it is more comfortable. It also provides a spacious foot box. I'm 6'5" and 250lbs, it's more than big enough.

And hammocks are also still kind of a craft industry, not mass produced Chinese junk (yet)
