There’s no perfect rain gear, just gear that’s perfect for your weather or circumstances (which can change).
It’s July. Are you going to wear a jacket and rain pants this time of year? It’s hot as balls.
>yes because I’m on a mountain that’s 20,000ft high>no because I’m in a subtropical jungleMy biggest gripe about ponchos is that no one has ever bothered to make a great one. They should all have:
>adjustable belts with some kind of cinching >hoods that are adjustable on two axis, have cinch cords, a closure over the neck, and sewn-in bills >sewn-in internal pockets>fasteners to create “sleeves” >>2609533Yes, different types of gear work better in different climates. Imagine my shock.
>>2609534It’s a cagoule. I think Sierra Designs made a really nice one.
The Packa is another hybrid. It’s a super ventilated jacket that covers your pack. It has an elastic cinch cord that holds it tight around the backpack, and has dedicated sleeves, so wind isn’t an issue. It can be used as just a pack cover while the sleeves, body, and hood are tucked into it, then “deployed” and worn as a jacket without removing your pack. It seems gimmicky but it’s actually quite handy if rain looks possible. It has tons of great little details as well.
Shug has a really great video on the Packa.
