I long to be an outdoorsman, to leave behind my fragile way of life (if only briefly) and be confident in my ability to survive when I'm not 10 minutes away from a Walmart at all times.

But is outdoorsmanship really accessible to all, at any age (I'm 26)? If I tried camping in my current state I'd likely need to be rescued. How can I go from someone who's only ever known the city to someone who can find water, start a fire, hunt, trap, forage, build shelter, survive? My current idea is to progress from hikes to day camping to overnight camping, with the ultimate goal of spending a week or more alone in the remote wilderness. Is this goal attainable? Or is survivalism really something you have to get a head start on and grow up doing it?

Follow up question: is disappearing when camping alone a realistic concern to you solo campers? maybe coming across something supernatural/a cryptid?
