Is anyone else this autistic when it comes to trail planning? forgive image sharpness I had to downscale because of 5mb level.

Yes. I once followed the 10k ft contour line in AZ (whole state) on maps and calculated the approximate area (51.51 sq mi in total roughly). For cross country trail hiking I prefer google earth to get a better idea of the terrain elevation changes to avoid cliffs.

i am waaay more autistic, i use the government surway map they use for monnitoring flood prone areas, road construction etc etc
it can even show old prussian land surveys from all they way back to 1977, landmarks, protected areas, military areas

I like to plan autistically. Excuse my shilling but Garmin makes the route plotting way easier than google earth because I can just tell it to follow known routes rather than clicking a thousand times to follow a trail. But then I get there in person and treat it more like vague directions because following a plan that closely takes away from the fun of exploring. plus there are more often than not some circumstances that require flexibility.

I'm getting more and more into it. Each major application is missing one feature I'm looking for which really sucks.

I've downloaded and messed around with QGIS, which is awesome but I haven't had the time to learn it properly and my computer sucks.

Of course I know how to use topographical maps, I just enjoy using google earth to find spots, then transitioning to maps to get a rough estimate of the hike. Using a satellite image of the trail, I can visually estimate what the hike would look like, both on and off trail.

Because it includes disjunct areas around the state I could only do it in pieces with multiple screenshots. The approximate total area when converted to the same unit is ~51.51 sq mi. For comparison there is a USGS document mentioning that the entire Wasatch range of UT has about ~42 sq mi of land above 10k ft. While the White Mountains of AZ by themselves by my approximate calculation is almost 33 sq mi above 10k ft, which compares impressively with the 100+ mile long Wasatch. I would really like to find data on CO (quoted as having 75% of all land in the US above 10k ft ASL) as well but I imagine I'd have to end up doing it myself in maps which would take many hours. Also all of AZ's 10k ft + mountains are uplifted and eroded volcanoes with the exception of Mt graham( which is tectonically uplifted metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks).
