It's not like the wax is there to slow the burning of the wick, the wax is the fuel itself. The wick is there to pull the liquid hot wax into the flame through capillary action and fuel the fire. If you use something that doesn't have the same good capillary action (like matchsticks), the flame doesn't get enough fuel, which is why you have a small and weak flame. Be glad it works at all for now. Also you shouldn't need multiple wicks, one in the center is enough for a normal candle. Those candles with multiple wicks you see sold in some stores are to compensate for retarded end users that don't know how to properly use a candle, so instead of explaining it to them they add more wicks at once so the improper usage doesn't cause quite as many issues.
