Color wise it's a match to an American Robin which is a migrational bird, or American Pipin, though from the beak I'd lean more into the Robin.
You will know once it matures, the feathers will molt and change color as it matures, if it's an American robin it will have a black head and usual red breast.
As for it's tail feathers don't worry about it, it's could be from the cat, but it will repair itself in time as the bird develops the oil for grooming.
Make sure he/she has a little plate of water to bathe in occasionally, meal worms for protein, they should grow up just fine.
As it's a migrational bird, you might want to check with state what to do, if you can set it free at maturity, then it will likely associate you with food and visit you, find a mate and return to nest. Robin's are particularly friendly birds.
