I have decided to invest in some backpacking gear and do abit of camping. When I look up hiking boots there is like a dozen on sale with outrageous RRP and I have no idea what to buy. Could you recommend some and tell me if any of these are good

Hiking boots are so heavy and stiff. I refuse to believe they have any legitimate purpose. Our ancestors hiked 24/7 with just sandals, our anatomy is made to do it without support. It may just take a little bit to strengthen up the muscles in your ankles if you're not used to using them.

I have flexible flatfoot and my feet just look retarded. They look like they should be giving me serious pain and I should have surgery to correct them for looking so fucked up. But I can still walk for a really long time on rough terrain with light Merrell shoes and I've never had a problem.

I wear military marching boots. They're just so comfy. Trailblazer cadet boots. I found them good enough to buy a second pair. They're a bit more expensive than the ones you listed but I've also used them for farm work. They held up well enough over the years that I decided to buy a 2nd pair.

Tried and tested on a farm and hiking. Straight through blackberry bushes. Completely soaked in cow shit, in honey and in mud. Few chemical splashes, kero, paint thinner and oils.

You should really head into a store and see what feels/fits well. I have some mid-tier merrills that have seen me through a trip to Africa as well as outdoor environment work. When considering water proof shoes, keep in mind that water proof means that they don't breath well. Good if cold and wet but if you're somewhere that's constantly warm/hot then you might consider a pair that is less water resistant but will dry quicker. Something like a goretex lined boot will give some water resistance (NOT water proof) while not getting too hot, so that can be a good jack of all trades, although they may take a while to dry once soaked.

I have Lowa boots. Ive been buying hiking boots since the 70s and what blows me away is how komfy and light these boots were out of the box. No break in. Light. Ive had vasque boots, bates, vietnam jungle boots, timberland hiking boots, docs, not just for hiking but wrenching, snow, but none are as comfortable and ready for the trail as these boots were on day one. However I am in a southern climate so waterproofing and abrasion is no longer a concern for me as it was when boldering granite in Wisconsin. Spend a few extra quid and take care of your feet. Its you most important gear.

There is no reason to hike with high-ankles unless you're mountaineering in the middle of winter on high mountains off-trail or working trail crew (or working at all in the woods, than you can consider boots).

Havent worn these but I've got a pair of roclite 275's and they my go to all rounder trail shoes, light but can tackle anything, I've done fell races in them, . Innov8 are top tier quality imo and if you can grab a pair for 55 quid Id say go for it. People say they may fit snug but they're size perfect for me.

Hiking boots keep my feet warm and dry in the snow. I like the extra support when carrying a heavy backpack. But trail runners are great for everything else.

Spending is for disposable items. Your clothing (unless high end designer) will not appreciate in value. You use it and chuck it or donate it. No profit.

Just buy a pair of lightweight boots that are comfortable and relatively low priced. You don't need them to last forever nor do you need to be able to resole them. Gore tex only for wet environments, otherwise it's just stuffy. Picrel is a decent boot that feels like a waterproof running shoe. Very comfy.

All-leather boots are popular for weldors and similar working around sparks and heat. A hiking style boot would be suitable for certain outdoor work environments for these trades, and a tradesman who liked hiking might not want to tote around a second pair of boots. The flame and spark resistance is also relevant to camp fires and catching sparks from ferro rods.

I'm struggling with this as well, boys. Always been a boots guy, M77, Altberg, Salomon Quests, Crispi, Lowa, etc. but I always feel like my feet get ultra wet from wet terrain and sweat and eventually get a bunch of blisters. Many people recommend goretex, but Im not sure if I should use it outside of winter season. Maybe thinner wool socks would help, but right now I just stick to trail runners. They easily get wet but at least they dry easily and airs easier.

Trail shoes are great for trails (duh) and hiking in the desert or on flat ground but if you ever need to do some light mountaineering or traverse an overgrown trail you'll want boots if only for the ankle protection. The first time you slip and smash the fuck out of a rock with your ankle you'll understand.

I used to use my nikes for forest w00lking or hiking and they were doing the job well.
But then I got a pair of proper shoes with a vibram sole, gore-tex, some other features I can't be bothered remembering and man what a fucking difference.
Wore them for a hike in -15C, didn't get cold, the difference in grip was really pronounced when walking on ice
Wore them in 30C just two weeks ago, didn't get hot or sweaty at all after a full day of setting up tents and tables for a camping event, while in my Nikes i swear I would have swamp feet 5 times over arleady

Turns out when you pay out the nose for reputable brands they tend to have some utility to back up that price

yeah, two weeks ago I hiked a ravine with smooth round dusty stones in trail runners.

was at some shoe stores today and also was a few shoe places last week, I just can't find any boot that is perfect for my foot. always something like discomfort around the top, or the shoe bending and pressing over my toes when I walk, or a side seam that cause pain on one of my ancles, or a defective sole with a little sort of hole in it, or a sole that doesn't fit my foot, or a wide heel. so sick of this. most shoe stores also have one size on display and the rest of the sizes hidden away at a back room so I have to constantly ask a clerk to go and get me this and that. man I will be happy if I can find a good fit one. planned use is longer distance with a big backpack so it's mostly mid and high cuts that have been tested so far, but maybe it's smarter to say fuck that and try some low cut ones.
