i think i would enjoy it as a hobby

I live in new england and there are tons of old foundations from farms, buildings, etc. I know theres plenty of neat relics hidden down there.

Looking on marketplace/craigslist theres a pretty steady stream of detectors for sale, see a lot of Minelab and Garrett.

Any advice on a good model(s) to look for?

There is probably a club near you that would offer to show you the basics even before you buy a detector. They would also know best places to buy, sell, trade equipment.

Reading, research and planning are big aspects to detecting. Engerlund has better and more history than the US

I'd say do what research you can on machines, then buy what you can afford and get good with that machine. You could spend $2500 on a Garrett ATX and still have no success bc you lack skill.

I love my Tesoro Vaquero but AFAIK the company is dead. I envy New Englanders for all the old sites and deep soft soil.

Think of metal detecting like playing the lottery. You're very unlikely to make a profit at it. But it's fun and you get fresh air and exercise, and sometimes find interesting bits of history.

Just do it, get a half decent detector and get out there. Be prepared to dig in the dirt and find a lot of garbage. You can adjust settings to dig more coins. The biggest hurdle can be finding ground to hunt. A handheld pinpointer is a must

I bought one. Did a lot of research to find old forgotten placer deposits near a river where I had to drive a few hours, then hike three hours into the section. As I approached I could see old piles of rock in small gullies where people dry panned before. I started searching and after a few hours I found a rusty nail, old metal can, and spent 22 cal bullet. At the far end I found fresh atv track, so I realized even though no vehicles were allowed anywhere near where I was there people coming in on atv to prospect. I went back a few times to keep checking and since I was by myself way out in no where I brought my pistol with me just in case. Always better to have it and not need it then run into folks who dont care about laws. Just something to consider depending on conditions and locations. I also bring a satellite phone, just in case. Inmarsat was having a sale.

It's fun, just be prepared for 95% of what you dig up to be completely worthless nails, cans, bits of wire, etc. But as another poster pointed out, it's like playing the lottery for free.

My entire childhood was metal detecting with my dad. Was dragged through the creeks and woods countless times, usually trespassing, in search of American Civil War relics and Hernando de Soto's gold. If we weren't in the woods, we were in libraries looking at old maps and newspapers on microfilm. I didn't mind it though, genuinely loved it and got to have a great connection with my dad.

We amassed quite a collection of old coins and Civil War relics (bullets, gun pieces, buttons, etc.) Over the years. One of our last finds was a civil war beltbuckle on a site our research said was an old homestead that the Union Army burned down after camping there for a few weeks. Never seen my dad so giddy as the moment he wiped the dirt off it to see a big "US" on it. After that, he just got too old and too busy after remarrying and having two new kids. One of these days I'll try and drag him back out there, I know he misses it.

No metal detector under $200 is worth your time, used or new. Would recommend investing in a new one. No one needs more than one metal detector; if someone is selling theirs its because its bad or they got a better one. Definitely learn how to properly filter out certain metals so you're not digging up beer cans all day. The setting on it might say it's filtering out trash metals, but you won't know until you actually test it out yourself. Also invest in a small pickaxe or hatchet for when a tree root is standing between you and your treasure.
