Best use of time for producing food on homestead

No.2614585 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Hey yall, I'm living on 40 acres with a good spring and fertile land and I've been here for a few years. I've been trying to get some goats this year but I had to put that off for a few reasons, mostly because i have to build another pen because the one I built for them has to house all my chickens I've been hatching (up to 70 something).
I planted wayyyyy too big of a garden this year and I cannot keep up with it, though I have canned around 70 cans of beans and stuff so far. But I have been slaving away at it and it has taken up most of my time for the past month. It has made me think, why am I spending all this time doing this when I want to be and am mostly animal based in my eating? I could have spent this time building a new goat pen and moving goats in and getting the ball rolling on meat and dairy production. If I had meat and dairy on top of my eggs and the fishing and hunting I do it'd be game over and I could just plant a small garden every year.
Anyone else go through similar decision with scaling down agriculture? I love planting and raising plants but corn is for chickens and pigs, not humans (as far as living off of it as a significant part of diet) in my opinion
