Starting a job soon where I'll be in the field (SW US) for a week at a time, backpacking mostly. I normally lean towards trail shoes, but I'm wondering if boots would make more sense.

Bump cuz im in a similar situation (field tech in the great basin). Im currently using some milsurp boots - airforce from before the new uniform code. Dont know thier actual name. They work well enough, but i got to keep moleskins on me and they collect cheatgrass seeds like a motherfucker

i work /out/ in desert utah and wear altras. boots arent necessary unless you are really clumsy and prone to stepping into cacti

Depends on the terrain. I've got leather merrels and they're great for me for summertime in the canadian territories. I've also got a pair of solomons with more ankle support for more rocky alpine terrain.

I think a pair of really light bare minimum shoes and a pair of good boots would be good, switching on and off so both sets have a chance to dry out and your feet get two different “workouts”

Baffin Monster boots are pretty tough and are available with toe/sole plates and the other option comes with additional internal metatarsal guards. I walked through rain, snow, ice, and shine in those bad boys.
