Is there a standard formula for calculating the height of a tree based on its diameter? This seems to be a difficult question to find the answer for. Obviously some constant might vary for different tree species.

Basically, I want to plant a tree in a certain spot where it would have a maximum height and I want to know how thick it would be.

I think you're best off finding the species you want and doing some of your own measurements.
Use the 45 degree method to find one with height similar to what you want, then take girth

No. Best you can do is find examples of the species and look at heights/widths and calibrate a sort of ballpark guess. For a start, you have no way of estimating how successful the tree will be in the spot you plant it. Could die a sapling, could grow for 200 years.

To clarify, I am cutting brush which is about 5-6 feet high at present, and saving just a few trees which should become large without the weeds choking them.

Your best bet is practicing your spacial aptitude, so that you can estimate the height by looking at the tree

Get a stick of known length and measure the length of its shadow. Measure the length of the shadow of the tree. Divide the length of the tree's shadow by the length of the sticks shadow, then multiply by the length of the stick.

There are charts that can tell you the approximate volume if you estimate the height and dbh knowing the average taper a species has. I don't believe you can get the height from the dbh.

I always use shadows like in picrel anon, all you need is your height memorised and your phone's calculator (can memorise tan tables instead of this if you're autistic).

Stand where you can see your shadow, measure the shadow's length then:

Divide your height by the length of your shadow.
Calculate tan^-1 (your height/shadow length) to give you the angle θ.
Then measure the tree's shadow length.
Multiply the tree's shadow length by tan(θ)
That's the tree's height.

Tree diameter is largely determined by type of tree and age.
The term you're looking for is Growth Factor.
You can find charts for tree growth averages for height and diameter.

Tree growth charts can be converted into linear equations. There absolutely are formulas based on averages by tree type.
