What are some good alternatives to freeze dried food for backpacking?
I can't tolerate the stuff no matter what it is. Dehydrated in OK but there is something to do with freeze drying that tears me up. Ate 2x Mountain House chili mac last week and farted myself bloody the next day.

Look up Skurka’s beans and rice. Pretty simple and delicious

Also instant rice with sausage, tomato powder, a bouillon cube, and tomato powder. It’s all about the sausage.

Knorr sides are ok. A little salty but cheap and popular.

You could get a year supply of freeze dried food for less than the machine itself.
Besides the machine being expensive, you got to buy the bags and all the food, prep the food, freeze dried it, seal the food. Not worth it

They put in lots of onion and leek because those are really cheap to freeze dry.

one of my favorites is to do tortillas, pepperoni, and a mozzarella cheese stick, it is a fine snack on its own but if you add some head it becomes a makeshift pizza. bagged spinach or arugula for the greens.

You can also use an air fryer for dehydration and dehydrate fruit as snacks (apples, strawberries, banana chips, blue berries, rasberries) or you can add them to oatmeal for a much better tasting hot breakfast

I like the dried soups. (Not dehydrated) Bear Creek Soup Kitchens is an example. BCSK is sold at Kroger grocery stores in the southeastern USA. Bring about 8 ounces of water to a boil, add the BCSK mix to the water , stir for about 12 minutes and you have 8 to 10 portions of soup.
The soup tastes good to me and the price per portion is cheaper than what you would pay for canned soup. They also have a long shelf life.
Potato flakes are tasty, hearty and cheap also and you they are good alongside your soup.

I just pulled one of the Bear Creek Country Kitchens soup mixes out of my camping gear closet. Beef / Rice Mix says 3 1/2 cups of water for four 250 calorie servings. FWIW. I like them.

I'm not accusing anyone in this thread, but I think it's hilarious that people will chastise those who eat fast food or long shelf life food (chips) as eating toxic, artificial stuff, but then, they proceed to eat super ultra mega preserved stuff that makes most people sick, like OP.

Freeze dried is literally just having 99% of the water taken out, that's how it has a long shelf life.

The broccoli cheddar soup is one of my favorite. It does t require as much simmering, possibly because the only thing that needs time are the tiny pieces of broccoli.
