Most shovels, even those from the army I can buy, have the binding very close to the shovel head. You WILL have sand and dirt etc. go into your binding and in a worst case scenario over a longer time period your binding will be stuck and you cant fold the shovel anymore.
The gerber binding is higher up so overall you get less dirt in your binding.
I can not comment on the weight
