I think there are a lot of /out/ misanthropes. People are attracted to nature partially because it's a place where there aren't so many people, so you get a lot of outdoorsy types who are that way because they don't like people.

It's similar to how environmentalists like Pentti Linkola are elitists and intellectual snobs who want to genocide most of the human race, supposedly to "protect the environment" but really just out of hatred.

And this explains all the elitism and gatekeeping and disdainful attitudes in /out/ subcultures. People get into this stuff, largely, because they're swollen-headed and egotistical and think of themselves as elite. So whenever anyone new comes in, the attitude is, "Ew, you peasant. Go back to the city where you belong. You have no place around noble nature-loving souls such as I." It's way past the normal hazing-the-newbs you get in most subcultures.

Don't get me wrong. I love nature. And yeah, people who don't know what they're doing deciding they're gonna go climb K2 or whatever do need a reality check. But the misanthropy is just... nerdy.
