I'm a former runner trying to get into hiking / camping more. I've done a ton of day hikes around my home in the northeast, as well as in Arizona, Colorado, Austria, and most recently Alaska. I am capable of going 10+ miles a day and gaining thousands of feet of elevation, and want to continue to build on this with this High Peaks Loop in the Adirondacks. https://intothebackcountryguides.com/trail-guides/adirondack-high-peaks-loop-backpacking-guide
Here's the thing though.... all my solo hikes have been day hikes, and every time I've been camping, I was with many other competent, able-bodied men. I have no issue pitching a tent, starting a fire, etc, but I saw this movie a long time ago and have since been terrified of the idea of being in the woods alone (or with a helpless other) in bear country. Yes, I know I am a bitch for this, but alas.
I know it is extremely improbable, especially with black bears, and that I'm more likely to break my leg or something but I can't help it. I had no fear of them or of grizzlies hiking alone in Alaska - my fear is only of them sneaking up on the camp while I sleep and getting the jump on me.
I know all the safety procedures, I have bear spray, a canister, and a hunting knife. How else can I prepare? I know the adirondacks are well known for their bears so I think it might be a good chance to overcome this irrational fear. Also, has anyone done this trail and know if it's well traveled.
