I'm on the verge of buying one of these bad boys to explore parks and crown land in Northern Ontario and for day fishing trips. What am I in for? Does anyone have any experience doing multi-day camping trips in one of these?

Ha ha, very funny. We get in up river, take it down all day, camp that night and then get back on the river. We end up at our landing around 2-4 in the afternoon, depending on how the river is running. Sacramento river, northern California.

How robust are these things? Can they take a little abuse or will I have to pack in 3 different ways to repair a puncture just to be safe? I'm thinking about taking it down some shallow rapid-y rivers and creeks which lead to some beautiful unoccupied lakes. Only problem is if something goes wrong with the boat I have no way out aside from a wretched day long bushwhack.

A canoe would be the typical way to explore crown land lakes up here, but that's not feasible for me for various reasons right now.

Well, like I said, I've never owned a challenger. The Excursion uses PVC impregnated fabric. It is very puncture resistant. You can take these down rapids. What is the Challenger made of and what is it rated for? It's half the price or less than the Excursion.

According to Cabela's it's made out of "Heavy duty, puncture resistant PVC". I'd assume it's not as puncture resistant as one that costs twice as much but I'm also not planning on intentionally trying to ruin it.

Maybe. But one bad anything (fall, meal, storm etc.) could mean you need rescuing. That's part of the risk.

Just wondering if anyone on /out/ has ever used one, or something similarly budget. It's not like you can tell how it will perform when it's in a box in the store either way. I will eventually just find out myself the hard way, ease into it with day trips at first.

I feel like puncturing an inflatable boat is far easier to do then damaging a canoe. And a canoe is easier to far easier to repair then an inflatable boat, given that water pressure on the hull is lower and is helping your patch vs air pressure of the boat is much higher and is pushing your patch away.

I grew up fishing the Neuse River in NC in a cheaper intex...$50 range...green. They would get small holes occasionally, usually in the bottom. This would cause small leaks that left you with a wet butt, but that's about it. They're durable and easy to patch. I've never had an experience where I was concerned with the boat sinking.

Everyone suggesting canoes or kayaks must not own cars. Inflatables are ideal for those of us with limited storage space and cars, not trucks.

big nope, thoose are beach toys. the fabric, the construction, the quality, everything about them is not made for your intended use. shure you can but why?
spend a little more and you get a proper inflatable, like my pic related. cost me 250€ new, can hold an motor if i want and is rigid af, great for fishing but weights about 25kg

or... spend even more and buy a packraft.
less room, less security since its just one air chamber (3 in the boat) and a bit more tricky to fish from but.. weighs 4kg while being made of eqally solid material.
hence why it costed me 800€.
i know some of you might be short on money but wasting it on crap products only makes it worse, thats when you should save up while looking for the cheapest quality instead.

Kayaks are the worst option. They're hard as shit to portage and they hold less luggage. Like I said earlier ITT a canoe is the best option, but I can't fit anything that big or heavy on my car and have nowhere to store it.

I have an Intex Seahawk 4 so similar but a big larger. I built a plywood floor for it and added a trolling motor. I think you will find it frustrating to get around with just the oars because the flat bottom makes it hard to stay on course.

Pros
>Packs up easily into the back of a car, even with the floor and motor
>Holds three adults or one adult with a lot of gear
>Stable enough to stand in if you build a hard floor
>Cost less than $400 including motor and battery (bought used)
Cons
>It is inflatable so you have to be careful with sharp objects or spiny fish. I carry a patch kit though I’ve never needed it
>Can only hold a small electric motor. With a bigger budget you could get one that’ll hold a 10 horse outboard

as an owner of an inflatable kayak that sounds tempting but the whole benefit of inflatable is that you can pack it neatly into a small carry bag. that's ideal for transport by hand or vehicle, no need for a roof rack. if you make a hard floor now what? you make as well make a hard kayak, or just buy a hard kayak. and a roof rack

The ones I've seen have been hinged in three sections to fold up. I think they'd fit fine in a car trunk. Never tried one myself though

Here's a picture of my buddy setting off for a 2 day trip. He's in an Excursion 4. He can fit everything in the boat, but you're not getting a second person in it. For two people plus camping and fishing supplies you're going to want a 5 or 6 person boat. Unless you're doing minimalist camping.

the one i bought is listed as a 2 person cackraft with a capacity of 300kg, bought it because i weigh in as almost two persons (130kg) and i didnt want it as a limiting factor. with my size i can always afford do carry the extra weight of a big packraft vs a small one, its around one kg anyway. its the difference of hiking before i pee vs after.

Inflatable rafts are always a gamble. I'd be more comfortable with a small aluminum fishing boat with some pool noodles taped to the lip to keep it afloat if it flips over in rough water.

I've owned one of these before and I do not recommend. It can rip pretty easily along the lines where it's heat moulded together. Just get a Kayak or something made out of very durable material, not soft plastic.

Speaking of collapsible boats, anyone tried a folding boat? I watched a couple put picrel together on the lake and it looked so flimsy and if it failed it would do so instantly, at least an inflatable takes some time to deflate. I think this one is like $500 from LL Bean too which seems insane.

OP here. I took my new seahawk out over the weekend with my girlfriend. I learned two things. 1. it really sucks in the wind. 2. you need two sets of paddles for two people, and that's especially true if it's windy. It was kind of a failed day as we kept getting blown back to shore and I eventually got too tired to keep fighting the wind, but some better planning and I see a lot of potential.
