Next week I will be doing my first ever hike. I'm going to be hiking in Tatra mountains. Any tips? What was your first hike like? Preferably in the mountains.

First proper mountain hike for me was Olympus overnight with a tent, was great and got me itching for more. Seems it was a perfect beginner mountain, maybe even too good because nothing so far has compared

it gets colder he higher up you go so have extra layers packed. i heard since oxygen is thinner up on elevation you can drink water to get some quick o2. so bring lots of water.

It's the Tatras, not the Karakoram. The effect will be negligible.

First hiked mountains in the Alps on a foreign exchange trip in high school (Tatras are somewhat close no?). Completely surreal. Been hiking mountains here in U.S but it just doesn't compare man. enjoy your hike

I grew up in the dinarid mountains so Ive been doing mountain hikes since i was in my early teens, the tatras seem to be in the same elevation range. In order to not make beginner mistakes the most important things are that you pack alot of water, if you're going in the summer wear long sleeves and a hat if you can as well as some sunglasses the sun gets intense on higher elevations, you really wont notice the air thin before ~1800m after that point you might get a bit nauseous and some minor cognitive stupidity but just take nice clean breathes through your nose and bring some snacks that are highly caloric and have sugar itll combat the sickness if you get it.

- Sunscreen, because you can get easily sunburned in mountains.
- A hat or a baseball cap to avoid getting sunburned.
- Sunglasses.
- A cheap raincoat.
- Cash, because there is a chance that where you are going, they don’t accept cards.
- Extra pair of socks and an extra t-shirt. Switch to it when you get to the guest house.
- Water.
- Some rice cakes or fruit or bread with a ham. Don’t take too much.
- Any boots or sport shoes that won’t cause you blisters.
- A fleece jacket or anything cheap that isolates heat.
- Pack the stuff to the backpack you have at home.
- Some breathable pants or shorts. Non skinny jeans are the best option, because you have them at home.
- If you are going to the Slovakian side greet everyone “nazdar”, on Polish side say “cześć”.

You can't go wrong there desu, but I'd recommend the westernmost / easternmost portion of the Slovak side (Roháče / Belianske) to avoid massive crowds.
Also in addition to the other replies, take a look at the planning tool at mapy.hiking.sk to gauge the times, plus be sure to revel in the best national on-ground navigation system (former Czechoslovak tourist markers)

I don't disagree but I always found it weird how people greet each other so casually up there, I still refuse to say čau/cześć/ahoj, but that's largely 'tism

A lot of tips already mentioned. Here's a few additional ones

>Study the route to determine the difficulty, trail class, and recent route conditions then plan accordingly with gear

Earliest hike I can remember was with my dad and a few of his buddys.
Pops hated to carry tents, always said it was 5 lbs of meat he could carry instead.
Out by Devils Postpile in the eastern sierra. Rained like hell one night.
Slept under a huge pine with a poncho and a trash bag pulled over my sleeping bag.
I slept fine, stayed pretty dry.

Not 100% on the point of starting before dawn, most of the routes there are manageable in terms of returning (home or to the nearest hut) before a potential storm (with frequent checking of the weather service). My concern are bears, those tend to be most active at dawn, although they avoid people most of the time. Balancing act between those, and the rain+lightning, which is just as, if not more dangerous in general.

I did a through hike of the lower tatras last summer.

It was pretty great, I took way too much gear, as we fit in the mountain huts just fine. Should have left all but my sleeping bag home. It wasn’t quite peak season so I guess that’s why there was enough space at the huts. Didn’t need much food either, you can buy warm nice meals and beer and Kofola at the huts.

Book the huts in advance if you can, carry 2 liters of water, though I didn’t die with just 1,5, but 2 would have been nicer.
