My Uncle just invited me on an astronomy campout, it will be the first time I’ve camped out in like, 7 years. None of my Boy Scout stuff has held up, and I figured now would be a good time to test out my bug out bag. What am I missing?

About everything of value. Grab a good sleeping bag, tarp, cot, and a good knife/axe and paracord.

As for food, freeze dried shits the easiest but if you got a budget I’d reccomend you make your own using prepared foods that are easy to cook and don’t take a lot of water (knorrs Idahoan potatoes uncle Ben’s shit like that)

I was told to look at this book. Any YouTube channels/reading you can recommend? I have a bit of experience with stars because I use a sextant, gyrocompass, etc for celestial navigation at work, but that’s it.

You will freeze if you cannot insulate yourself from the earth. It is an infinite heat sink. Concrete is somehow worse. Consider a foam mat if you're looking for simplicity.

Look man I'll level with you. I don't have a lot of expectations for a 100 dollar 0F bag. It's probably pretty heavy, I'm more concerned with the volume. A quality synthetic or down bag is money but there's a performance factor there

Dont listen to that guy. It's fine for a 3 season bag. If you want a lightweight bag that's also suitable for serious winter camping then it's probably better to splurge a little. A sleeping pad and liner stretch the temperature rating of your bag even further.

Sorry let me clarify. I was speaking mostly about it as a bug out or whatever bag or general backpacking. My guess I'd that it'll keep you warm at least to 15F, which may or may not be applicable to your trip. Money will get you lighter and more packable warmth, which is important when dealing with limited space and weight taken up by other things. But definitely get something for underneath you, for both comfort and more importantly warmth.

Op, Take the essentials you can't share. Check the weather and if it isn't cold enough you don't need an expensive sleeping bag. Spend your money in a good insulator and outdoor clothes if you don't have any, if you can make do with what you have, use it, and if you actually enjoy the experience after all those years, buy what you slowly will need, no need to rush.

I have a camping trip scheduled for labor day weekend, the outdoor gun range I visit also has a camping spot nearby. Going to go and shoot guns all day, then cook some steaks over the fire.
