Why does a shitty 70mm travel scope with a $25 Plossl eyepiece have better edge to edge clarity than $200 binoculars? Binocular manufacturers, explain yourselves.

I'm thinking a small, quality refractor with a binoviewer could take the place of binos and a spotting scope for glassing game, and kick the shit out of both while costing less. Has anyone tried it?

Because the two instruments are very different things. Binoculars have extra elements in them like prisms Etc in the light path and this makes it more complex. Refractors usually only have two elements of front and then an eyepiece. Larger refractive elements like 80 mm in a standard for $500 refractor can be made very easily and very well. Not very many binoculars have 80 mm objectives and most of them like Celestron or Mead are pretty garbagey these days. You have to go and buy partial or fully Apple chromatic designs to do better.

I own both a Diamondback, and a couple of Nikons. Diamondback is quite a good bino for it's price range. Good entry-level birding/hiking bino.

Makes sense.
<happy with my monarch 5s. Have a chintz athlon spotting scope that cost a bit less. At low zoom image quality is comparable to my binos, but the angular view field is much smaller. At high zoom the field is similar but the glass is very wavy, image is dim, and colors are trashed.
Fine for how little I use it. If I lived in a mountainous area with good glassing opportunities at range where 60x would be needed, I'd drop $1k maybe on a scope, but no real reason to go past 8x here and my binos are fine for that.
