Satisfaction of shelter type used by long distance hikers on the AT

No.2627802 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
This backs up my schizo rant in another thread about gear being designed for the west coast and people using it on the east coast to their own detriment.

Most trekking pole tents are single walled, and become condensation nightmares during the warm, humid east coast summers. The link has data on specific brands and models, with Zpacks (do they even make a double walled shelter?) being the most popular brand of trekking pole tent, but the SMD Lunar Solo and Gossamer Gear the one being two of the most popular models. The XMid (double walled) is on the list as well.

Compare it to the free standing category. The only discernible difference (outside of weight, obviously) is ease of setup, which is debatable, and the fact that nearly all free standing tents are double walled.

Conversely, hammocks were rated the most satisfactory. Hammocks are perfectly suited for the warm, often-flooded Appalachian Trail.

Obviously it’s a small sample and it’s all opinion based with widely varying, unaccounted for factors, but it’s still interesting.
