I have both and it depends on how you're making the fish. Shallow frying in oil? Cast iron. Searing fillets? Carbon steel gets hotter faster and gives a better sear.

Caught 11 of these small-medium sized bass on Sunday. They were going crazy for my rapala floating crankbait in bright orange, got a few on the frog popper too but lost just as many. Cooked 3 of them up for dinner on the fire along with some potatoes and sweet potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil. What a day.

I do pretty much the same

They do make these soft plastic bait holders that are almost like the old school 25 disc CD holders you would have in your car, and then pic related is more like a binder, they’re tempting. Be weary of putting soft plastics into regular tackle boxes because some plastics don’t agree well with other plastics/rubbers.

I always keep them in original resealable packs. obviously if you mix them, best case the colors bleed onto eachother, worst case they melt. I don't like getting my boxes all nasty and greasy anyways.

Go to small streams and bust your ass, overfilled rivers always catch less fish; but if you can find a good slack line, odds are you’ll land a nice one. Wading through tiny but flooded creeks been some of the best fishing I’ve had.

Oh I almost exclusively fish these conditions with spinners, just today I was using the black rooster tail, anything with strong contrast doesn’t need to be shiny. Some of my buddies also use chatter or creature baits but spinners more fun for me.

Do you mean the bait keeper?
Usually it has to do with a hook being intended to hold a soft plastic. I actually tie bait keepers on to j hooks specifically to rig them with soft plastics.

nvm I watched one of orvis' videos about prospecting for trout
this sounds like the most fucking complicated thing I have ever wanted to get into lmao
having to know all this stuff about the different tippet diameters and types of flies in different sizes to use depending on the life cycle of bugs
I'm still pretty new to fishing in general I'll probably try to get into fly fishing when I'm more comfortable
though swinging around the rod was really fun for my first time trying it

you don't. i'm just stating that high vis braid makes the most sense, but if you are running straight braid(which is just laziness) you don't want hi-viz cause it's more spoopy to fish. moss green is a normal color they are used to with algae and vegetation.

you can go out and catch fish with much less than they tell you that you need
if you buy a fly rod, a 9'2x leader, a spool of tipppet to top up that 2x leader, and a couple bead head krystal buggers you can go to almost any body of water and catch fish. add in a few soft hackles and a spool of 4x tippet and you can catch fish in any body of water with fish over 4 inches. it can be absolutely autistic, sure, but it can also be simple.

Not the person you were replying to, but I have wondered if you had really small stands of fluoro and braided them together, would it work the same as braid without the visibility drawback? Or is it the material that braid uses that makes it so strong at smaller diameters?

I didn't get a reply so I looked into it more myself. Seems braid is made of a different material than mono/floro. But also Spiderwire does make a clear/translucent braid and a few others make different colors like white, blue, and yellow. So I guess it was just a matter of time.

Spectra fibers are not like mono or flouro, if anything a braided flouro would have more texture, more stretch, and I believe less abrasion resistance.

Pack light so you can walk down the beach easy
Use light tackle, something like salmon rod set up is ideal
Learn to read the beach structure.
Fishes are closer to the shore than you think. You don't have to wade far or wade in at all.
Sand crab is a good free bait. Sandworm/ghost shrimp can be brought. I prefer just using lures most of the time though (gulp sandstorm, lucky craft 110, 5/8 oz Kroc, and 3/4 kastmaster, 3/4 oz - 1 oz bucktail are my go to )

I prefer light tackle surf fishing, lucky craft flash minnow 110s on 15lb when specifically targeting halibut, carolina rigged sand crabs on light 6-10lb for corbina, perch and croaker. You can also do the more traditional long rod and soak bait if you want.

I believe the translucent one is just braid dipped in fluoro, but as someone who ties directly to braid for better sensitivity, I'd be interested in knowing just how effective it is compared to mono/fluoro. A truly translucent braided line feels like it would make fluorocarbon lines obsolete (mono will still beat it in cost)

How long do you go out and at what times? Anecdotally, I see the most pictures of larger catfish when it's dark outside (or I'd recommend very early in the morning, like before 10am, if you don't want to night fish)

Anyone know of a metal body spinning reel for around $50? I am most likely going with a pflueger president if nothing better surfaces. It’s not ideal, but I need to create two salmon setups for the fall run ( wife and son)I’ve used the president in previous years and they will work, but there’s no good place to find specs on reels to see what may be better built. Last year, I had salmon on that literally twisted the reel body while fighting the fish and I was really concerned it would snap.

I don't think there are any. You could try the Penn Pursuit IV, it's graphite but beefy and people use them for strong saltwater fish.

I typically fish for a few hours or more. I’ve gone first thing in the morning, mid day, and sunset. I’ll cast out my line, check my bait every 20-30 minutes, recast. If an hour or so goes by I’ll move down the bank.

Got five brown trout from a secluded stream here in the Ozarks the other day. I know you fellas out west aren't impressed but browns are a rare treat around here. 99% of the trout we have are rainbow stockers.

Isn’t the water a little warm for trout if you are catch and release? Above like 70ish degrees (can’t recall exactly) trout can’t recover well from a fight. I have always stayed away from trout in the summer for this reason.

Found this spot while exploring south of Mendocino California, anyway to find out depth, what the bottom is like before going there. Any maps or apps you guys recommend? A cove pretty close to the spot where the picture was taken looks pretty sandy. I want to target rockfish, cabs, and lings.

I think I found a good hole. I pulled one up to the surface that was about a pound. You could've put a 50 cent piece in his mouth. But when I lifted him to put him in the boat he shook his head and got off. If he's in there I know there's others his size.

I like the lunkerhunt pocket frog. I don't like the skirts even though a lot of people swear by them. Lunkershit gets a lot of hate, and rightfully. You should buy two of them because one of them will probably break or not work right. I had a dark one I liked but then I cast it once and it bounced off a seawall and both of the legs fucking blew off of it. Like the plastic broke at the body, it didn't just pull the leg joint out of the lure body. Make sure you get him warm and soft and squish him a bunch. Bend the hook points out a little bit to where it's just past the body and you can feel it poke you a little when you run your hand over it. Also put a lot of powerbait or similar scent on it. Stink frog is the way to go. Put the scent inside of it if you can.

I got pic rel from a bass pro and they're pretty good in sand. They don't get too much sand in them vs. other kinds of water shoes that are more open-toe/feet style. Certain parts of an inlet I was walking up had me sinking ankle deep but was able to pull my feet out with the shoes not coming off pretty easily. Grip isn't great on wet mossy rocks but I think that's just how rubber is. I would recommend shoes with laces vs. slip on water shoes if you think your feet might sink into the sand so you don't end up losing a shoe.

you're probably fishing in the wrong spots and/or at the wrong depth. fish near logs if there are any. drop shot rig is easy for getting the depth you want. hook about 12 inches above the weight is pretty standard for channel cats in shallower water. use shrimp or even scented soft plastics like berkley powerbait, it doesn't really matter. especially for channel cats(which is probably what you have.) If you don't catch anything like that, there ain't no fish. channel cats are very easy to catch and aren't as picky as other cats. I get smaller ones as one of my most common bycatch regardless of how I'm fishing.

Everything else I could target would require a boat. For context I fish saltwater on the east coast. I change up how I fish. Spend some time experimenting with lures that I don’t have much confidence in. Sometimes I’ll just say fuck it and rock the ultralight outfit with 2lb test knowing there are bigger bass in the water, or go the opposite end and only throw big swimbaits. You think you can avoid blacks by driving to a small country town then realize they are 50% of the population. I'm probably just going to start littering with them because they obviously don't care about trash sitting all around them (see Haiti). Why put any effort into cleaning up after myself anymore? I think I'm going to start purposefully littering these places. My only escape is driving 3-4 hours to west NC to secluded trout waters because everyone knows that blacks HAVE to be at a place where they can just park and throw a line in right away. Then get snagged and cut the line at their pole rather than breaking the hook off. I was prejudiced before going fishing, now I'm a full blown racist after seeing how black people fish. Having said that, I have no problem becoming friends with black fishers who pick up after themselves.

I know plenty of them. nc is the melting pot of every shitty type of person you can think of, and it only gets worse every year due to the growth. I can't wit to get the fuck out of this shithole and never come back. I don't even have nostalgia of my home state anymore, that's how terrible it is now.

I'm bringing 9" punker style walking lures (I guess the saltwater equivalent are large plugs) will this line choice work? I also have 50 pound Co-polymer shock leader when fishing topwater lures.

If you aren't getting it back then put your hand on the reel, point your rod at the snag and back up. That way it breaks at the knot and you leave less line in the water.

My luck has turned. I caught 9 fish today. One sunfish that I can't identify (pic rel) that has decently sharp teeth, definitely sharper than a bass but not as bad as a walleye; a bluegill; and 7 baby cats. I saw a couple big carp, including one that was struggling to navigate the pond due to its size. I wish I could've caught one. I've never caught a carp before.

I've had really good luck with this technique. If you watch towards the end he shows a different way to do it. That's how I do it and with great success. I have even got lures and heavy 3 or 4 ounce bottom rigs unstuck while fishing the jetties. You can even do it with a spinning setup.

When I'm fishing off my local town pier I catch some pollock but mostly mackerel. The pollock are way better eating, the mackerel that come into the harbor are tiny and not worth the effort to clean them for the tiny amount of meat you get. You can use just about anything. I use 3 inch hellgrammites on a 1/16oz weighted hook.

Worse comes to worse, my family will tell me in person what species we are going for and I’ll just go to a tackle shop there and get whatever line I need. If it’s large, big ass species of fish, I won’t even bother throwing my baits. I’m only bringing 2 reels, a 200 and 300 size baitcaster and those CERTAINLY don’t have enough line for big salty beasts.

I don't know how you're fishing for them, I use a pretty small silver spoon, as glittery as possible. Reel it in fast and keep pausing. Guys I see at the dock who pull in the most mackerel usually have a line with up to 6 lures spaced out on the same line, usually little feathered things with bright neon colors but personally I have always had the best luck with glittery silver.

I visited atlantic canada in july and it was teeming with mackerel, just sitting on the beach you could see schools spazzing out at the surface. On light tackle theyre a pretty fun fight, 1/4 kastmaster was my best lure before the salt wrecked it

Depending on if you're gonna go all out or just more chill chasing smaller stuff on the inshore reefs, I would look into what the aussies do. Popper/stickbait spinning setups and vertical jigging. SEA has gt and doggies which (from what I understand) are some of the gnarliest sport fish that people target.

From what it looks like the surf has some good sportfish that can definitely spool you. I’ve never tried swimbaits in the salt but if it’s anything like freshwater, when you get bit it’s gonna be a good fish. I’ve had something (best guess is a shark or ray) peel all my line off on a 4000 size reel from the shore. Did some saltwater fly fishing for the first time today. I'm confident in my technique, but I wasn't able to get the line out any more than 30-40 feet at best. I'd say save up for now and just go wet wading while it's warm out. Wear full size pants if you're afraid leeches are in the water and tuck them into your shoes/boots. I don't have any personal experience with cheap waders but there were enough bad reviews on amazon about them leaking during the first use that I'd just stay clear. Rather pay a high price once than to pay multiple times for shitty waders that ruin your fishing day and might end up costing more money in the long run from having to constantly buy new waders.

It actually casts decently on my 9 weight with an intermediate line. 60 to 70 feet. I couldn't get it any farther but a 60 foot cast on a 9 weight is very fishable. I could probably do more with my 11 weight and my 450 grain full sink line.

Like, if you want to put a 1/12 Oz kastmaster 60 feet away and still handle a fish with 10lb mono and 15lb braid my hyperfinesse is the ticket. Fellow puget sound anon here. Pier fishing generally sucks, you might be able to snag some rockfish, but its always crowded. I've done some surf fishing with limited success; I used to catch flounder under the Tacoma Narrows bridge, but its hit or miss. Salmon fishing is horribly crowded, you will spend most of your day tangling lines with people who barely speak English. Lake Washington has some decent perch fishing: Seward Park area and down by the Renton boeing facility (early morning at Gene Coulon park is usually good). Area around the UW arboretum is OK for smallmouth. Lake Sammamish is also OK for bass, but a boat is pretty much required. You will have the most luck, fun, and solitude if you do the following: hike into the alpine lakes and fish for trout. I will give you a couple of my go-to spots: Swan Lake (near lake Kachess), Embro Lake (off hwy 2 past Skykomish), and Baker-Thietes (near Swan lake, road exists but isn't on any map). There's plenty more, but exploring and finding your own spots is half the fun. Bring a light spinning pole, some spinners/spoons, bobbers/weights, and some mealworms. These fish are hungry and plentiful (although usually not very large). Alternatively, drive out to the penninsula and go for surf perch, or fish off the Long Beach jetty for lingcod.

Good hunting. Drive up NF-120 until the road gets too rough, then start walking. Be on the lookout for a trail on your left that veers off from the road. Take that, and hike 1.5 - 2 miles, you will end up at a makeshift campsite that abuts the lake. A 1000 size spinning reel can hold like ~300+ yards of 8 pound braid, why the fuck do I need that?

Does it damage a spincast reel to use higher strength line than it's rated for?

I got this el cheapo reel mostly because I liked the little ugly stik rod it was on, it only lists up to 8lb line on it, will it damage the reel if I put some 15lb line on it instead? And what about using braid instead of mono? I'm asking because I have done this with several other cheap reels in the past and I tend to wear them out and destroy them very quickly, I wonder if it's because I'm putting too heavy line on them, or if that's unrelated and it's just because I abuse them in other ways

That's kind of a loaded question because you could put 80lb line on it if you really wanted and it wouldn't damage anything but if you then tried to break that 80 pound line with that combo you would certainly break the reel before the line. The main thing those ratings for is to approximate spool size, if you went down to 4 or 6 pound test it would hold more than 110 yards and if you spooled with 10 or 12 you would hold less than 110 yards and if you went to, say, 15 pound braid you could probably fit 150 yards, but then the line probably costs more than the reel it's on.

Also I that rod is the one I think it is I think I have the same one and use it for ice fishing.

Ugly Stik Dock Runner. I got it because I keep breaking the tips off rods because I'm a careless fuck and keep cramming them in my trunk and throwing shit on top of them. I'm tired of it and I spend a lot of time fishing off docks or in creeks and other places where casting distance isn't really a huge deal, so I figured a tiny rod with a fiberglass tip will be tough for me to kill. I still have some bigger ones but from now on this will be my go to for general short distance fishing and I can keep it in the trunk 24/7 without worrying about it.

And yeah, nothing that extreme, probably just 15lb braid, I have some extra kicking around anyway. I was just asking because I've had like 3 of these cheap reels in a row get fucked up somehow, either they get wobbly or they stop snapping closed when I start to reel. I was wondering if I had destroyed them by putting 15lb braid on them when they were designed for 8lb mono, but it's probably just because of all the other abuse. Catching fish so big they're breaking my reel would be a problem I would love to have.

Some daiwa reels with deep spools have a shallow spool model available in NA. Usually it's just one size. For example the new 2023 tatula LT MQ's have 3000D and 3000 shallow spools. All other sizes are deep only.

Also because daiwa just released the 2023 Tatula LT MQ a lot of places have the old Tatula LT's on clearance. My favourite reel besides the vanford. Prefer it over the BG (weight), stradic (tatula is smoother) and procyon (weight is same, i find it smoother...but overall feels better). Anyone in the market for a new reel pick one up while they're on clearance won't be disappointed.

don't. For the best "budget" option go with the abu garcia max series. I think you can get the max x for like $60, cheaper if you shop around. Once you move up to SLX the quality is more than you'll ever really "need"

caught my first flathead on a crappie jig! I've tried to target these on at least 6 different occasions trying to use cut bait or live bait to no success, only channel catfish would hit it. But today I go out with a 1/16oz crappie jig bobby garland and a wacky rig senko to try and catch some crappie and bass. This crappie jig gets lit up in 2 feet of water! I set the hook and it's a 4 pound shovelhead at the other end. I was so stoked. I'd heard of old timers targeting shovelheads with crappie jigs, and pork chops on big hooks (jig and pig), but I never expected this guy to be on the other end of my line. So happy to add a new species this morning!

It's harder to learn on a cheap baitcaster than it is to learn on one from a reputable brand. Get one of the entry levels from daiwa/shimano/abu like a fuego or slx.

these guys may disagree on whether it's a good brand, but I'm new to baitcaster's and got a lew's classic pro for $35 dollars from a really good clearance deal and I love it. I only fish with a baitcaster now. Look for a good deal on a quality reel, they're out there.

Catch the same fish over and over again for years. Document their growth, catch them as many times as you can to pressure them to not be taken by some Jose or Tyrone who will catch and cook them.

My PB smallmouth was caught 3 times, first time she was ~3.8 pounds, second 4.2 pounds (old PB), and then this April she was 4.6 pounds (latest PB). All the wounds I caused her from gigantic treble hooks from my swimbaits always heal 100% too.

Depends on the soft plastic, really. You could probably go 8/0 and 10/0 if the plastic isn't that big.

I would fish treble hook lures anyway. It's only small treble hook baits catching tiny fish that pose a change to hooking yourself. Large fish + big bait = very low chance.

I want to release the pike, but every time I catch one with a treble hook it takes hours to get the treble hook out of the jaw.

What is the actual strategy for getting hooks out
I usually use forceps and try to push them opposite of the direction they went in
sometimes they come out super easy sometimes it's a struggle and I feel that I'm hurting the fish way more than I need to

I sometimes switch out my trebles to in-line singles or short assist hooks made for lures. Shout kudako assist or ringed are nice and hook up a little more than just straight in-line singles

you can fish barbless, also just grab the shank as close as possible to where it goes into the fish and pull it out the opposite direction. If it doesn't come out easy, give it some forward pressure opposite the direction of where the barb is on the hook, and pull out. Beyond that just get lucky. If you can't get one out of it's tongue or gut or gills and it's gonna bleed real bad. Just cut the line and let him loose with the hook. They can digest that thing in a couple weeks.
