Just moved to Georgia and started this challenge two weeks ago, was wondering if anyone from /out/ had completed the Georgia 4000 and had any advice for the longer bushwhacks.

Also, other Georgia Appalachian /out/ stuff welcome as well; I want to peakbag and I think this challenge is a really good balance of trail/wilderness but I was wondering where are the must go places. I hiked Yonah mountain and I'm gonna go back to trad climb but what are the other good climb spots, and where are the good cliff jumping spots?

I didn't know about this, i'm OP of other thread, sounds cool though. i would be interested in starting or completing some sections with others potentially as well

Ah, didn't look into your thread, but they are mostly talking about gear or hikes closer to Atlanta or the AT; I'm more looking for the higher peaks and northern part of the state.

I finished the Catskills 3500 when I was back at college and so was looking for another peakbagging challenge to properly "see" the range since I moved down here. I haven't done any of the peaks, but my favorite summit in the southeast in my experience is Pinnacle Mountain in SC. not too far away and the area is incredibly rich in general. if you are about peaks I think you will greatly enjoy living around the appalachian mountains. They may not be the highest, but they are plentiful and the hikes are great.

I don't know anything about climbing, not athletic enough for that...the georgia 4000 seems like a great objective for me, I've been specifically looking for things like this to start doing, checklist things to keep me planning weekend to weekend.

my mistake on the thread. I did Raven Cliff Falls Dismal Loop and then Sassafras via NC178 two weeks ago; I was totally shocked to see how tall some of the peaks were. I saw Pinnacle on part of the drive; gonna check out the rock climbing routes to spice up the ascent.

I love the appalachians; spent a ton of time in the NE just seeing as much of them as I could. What they lack in height and sharpness they make up for in the fall foliage and the ruggedness; just wish that GA would cool down a little bit

my man, I was going to skip recommending that because of how grueling it'd be in this heat. However it was a pretty life-changing experience for me so I guess I should think to mention it in the future. I did this exact pair about 10 years ago and still really cherish my pictures. The dismal trail is truly dismal-- you are probably more fit than me and I was doing it as only a beginning hobbyist hiker. It was there that I truly learned the amazing power of electrolytes when you're completely out of steam.

Is there still a river crossing that's just 2 wires on sassafras? I think that's where it was.

We could coordinate doing a 4000 peak "together" right now. Don't have to go together or interact in any way, but we could do it at roughly the same time and report back. I am unemployed and just rambling around right now.

My buddy and I did it at the end of June. Heat was in the high seventies and low eighties with god-awful humidity, but both of us were used to the heat from the summer. We clocked the dismal loop in 3 hours and sassafras in 3 hours after we drove to the trailhead. We did not cross a river on Sassafras from the SW, but you do cross the falls at Raven Cliffs via the suspension bridge. The 'hard' hikes in GA tend to be mid-hikes compared to out West.

I'm near Augusta and most of my buddies are in Columbus or here.

That's Alex Mountain, and you can stay on the road and reach the top via a small trail that doesn't go on private property. Flint Knob you have the same issue but some of the locals showed us a route they have been bushwhacking that allowed us to get to the trail.

Take on some of the Appalachian and blue mountains before you say that!

Anyway, pick one! Let's do it. Separately. I'm not that social, and trying to learn to camp and stuff.

I haven't ever really gone on a "bushwhack" hike but I mean I've hunted and grew up in the south...just have to look for snakes more I guess and pay more attention to gps/learn more orienteering.

The NE Appalachians have their own challenge for super hard dayhikes: https://northeastultra8.com/ I've only done the Devil's Path in a day and the last time I tried the Pres traverse it went really bad. I'm actually making a list of the SE Appalachian hard hikes to do. None are in GA so far. Shenendoah NP loop I started way too late and didn't make it to Old Rag, what the west has in elegain the east makes up for in heat and humidity

Also, I'm game. drop your dc or something so we can coordinate. Bushwhack just means the peak has no trail to the top. You can either navigate via map & compass or GPS. some of these peaks are a mile offtrail. Catskills have bushwhacks but the herd paths (think human game trails) are pretty obvious once you get experience. Flat Top & Slaughter Mountain were only like 250m - 400m from where I left the trail. If you are used to prancing xaround the woods in the south it's the same.

Check out carrahee. It has rock climbing and the hike up was made famous by the series Band of Brothers. I’ve climbed the walls there but never hiked. The views from the top are pretty.
